What I think is happening is yum is look for this libstdc file and isn't finding it, because I when I search for vnc-server I see that yum can find it.

Then I noticed that here - http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...pdates/4/i386/ the libstdc file doesn't exist,
but here - ftp://ftp.informatik.uni-frankfurt.d...pdates/4/i386/
The file exists...I need to install vnc-server and an ftp-server

Any help at all would be great

I don't think the FC4 repos are even active anymore.

There are however some left over Fedora legacy mirror servers still active but as the Fedora Legacy project shut down this year it can't be guaranteed how long they'll stick around.
The list of mirrors are over at fedoralegacy.org

In the long run you'd be best upgrading to Fedora 7 or 8 if you want to carry on using your package manager to install software..

This is a server I'm renting, is there anyway to upgrade it remotely?

I see..
You could edit the fedora repo files to point to a fedora legacy server instead of the now non-existant FC4 repositories.

The repo files are in /etc/yum.repos.d, make copies of the ones you're about to edit.
I can't remember what they'll be called as I'm on F7 but you'll have at lest one repo file for fedora and one for core.

Edit the first section of the fedora repo file and comment out the mirrorlist line, now uncomment the baseurl line.
Change the URL after baseurl= to an active FC4 repo server.
I've had a look on the fedoralegacy.org page I linked to earlier found an active Yum-capable FC4 repo in France and browsed the server to get the URL for FC4 i386.
If you wanted to use this one in France the URL would be http://fedoralegacy.ggu-squad.org/fedora/4/i386/ with the trailing slash.

Save the repo file and try your install.

Well I tried changing the base URL is the fedora.repo file so now it looks like this -
[base]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=http://fedoralegacy.ggu-squad.org/fedora/4/i386/
#mirrorlist=http://fedora.redhat.com/download/mirrors/fedora-core-$releasever
enabled=1
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora

But I'm still getting the same results as above, and it looks like yum is still trying to use - http://download.fedoraproject.org/pu...i386/libstdc%2

Maybe because vnc-server isn't in the fedora.repo repository?

EDIT - alright i fixed it and everything seems to be working ok now, but now i need to install a ftp-server, how can i do this?

Yes the old stale repos are still there. The package you need as a dependency is "libstdc++" and it is present in the repo you listed.

try this command
Code:

rpm -ihv ftp://fedora.bu.edu/core/updates/4/i386/libstdc++-4.0.2-8.fc4.i386.rpm
then try the yum install again.
