put in /etc/yum.conf this line

You needed to download the rpm files, that's why you get the file not found on the first two
Errors

You have the rpm installed and it's in the way, so try using

yum reinstall <URL to rpm>

I was uninstalling them initially with Settings->Apps -> then using the uninstall button on the app. The drag method is a lot faster and has the benefit of removing the icon so I'll go to that

Meh, I found the solution, touch and hold the dead apps icon, a "Remove X" will appear at the screen top, drag icon to the "Remove X", and that's it.

I still don't understand why android is dumb...

I have a Moto G LTE with KitKat 4.4.4
I've been noticing that when I uninstall apps, the apps launch icon is left on the desktop, if I touch the icon I get the expected "App isn't installed" popup....
