shows that xpdf depends on poppler-utils too, so if poppler is the problem then xpdf would not print either,
since he can print from it, poppler is probably okay

I think lpoptions is a whole separate thing from cups, it won't get updated with changes when you change cups configurations. You'd have to run the various lpoptions commands to update it:
