You can do that by editing the file ~/.kde/share/config/kdesktoprc. There are sections called [Desktop0], [DesktopScreen0] etc. The option's name is CurrentWallpaperName.

If you are using the latest nvidia driver 173.xx that might be the cause. I had to revert back to 169.12 to fix the problems with the missing shadows in compiz. Using Nvidia 8800GTS.

I had to install xine-lib-pulseaudio and I have pulseaudio plugin back again. Simple.
