Re: Dumb Btrfs Questions

btrfs supports "btrfs send" which is the efficient version of sending snapshots. Of course it's only available if the destination storage is btrfs based and it's a mirror of the source btrfs file...

Re: No ethernet connection

NetworkManager is hooked into a desktop widget on most Fedora desktops, KDE has widget and I'm pretty sure Gnome does. So what does NM do if you use the widget to disconnect and then reconnect? ...

Re: Upgraded to F20 - Firefox crash-o-rama

I'd run memtest86 right away and see if the RAM is bad. Is it always Firefox or does anything else crash?

Re: System on USB stick, why so sluggish?

They should have a blue stub in the port according to the standard, maybe some companies just violate the standard and use
old ports. But then they wouldn't work at USB3 speed because the USB3 ports...

Re: System on USB stick, why so sluggish?

There's no need to randomly plug into different ports, the USB3 ports should be visible as having the blue stub in the port instead of the usual black for USB 2.

Re: Memory and swap usage increases continually

running smem as your user will just show the memory used by processes you own, so that might explain the missing amount. Try running it as root, I think then "smem" will show all the usages

Re: not enough space in /tmp copying DVD using kde

/tmp in Fedora 20 is based off tmpfs, which means all the storage of files in /tmp are resident in RAM. Because of that, /tmp is defaulted to something like 50% of the ram. My Fedora 20 laptop has...

Re: Fedora 20 won't install on my best machine...

Yes, but you have to opt into using the Advanced Editor, you might have it as the default in your Fedora Forum user profile or you'll see a button "Go Advanced" to use the advanced editor. When there...

Re: mpd cli client mpc error

Sometimes you can start it back up with 'systemctl restart mpd.service' and it'll be okay, and there's an mpd log file in /var/log/mpd that usually helps.

Re: Memory and swap usage increases continually

Install the tool "smem" from the Fedora repository and run it in a command line.

It will show the list of running apps on your machine sorted by how much memory they are holding

Re: My YUM not recognising that there are updates

This is the tail of my yum.log. I do updates manually but I run 'yum check-update' pretty often (probably once a day or so) and then
update after I review the list. I have 3876 installed packages...

Re: My YUM not recognising that there are updates

Hmm, well maybe you just really don't have updates. The most recent update I see on Fedora 20 was flash-plugin version 11.2.202.400. Mine updated on Aug 12

Re: New fedora idle = 75% CPU

I tried using strace on KDE konqueror, which is another browser I use but which has much less idle cpu, it also shows these poll /timeout events but at a much slower rate. Also the events fire most...

Re: My YUM not recognising that there are updates

Try a yum repo that you can be sure will have updates you don't have:

Do you see a listing of updates or just nothing

Re: New fedora idle = 75% CPU

It seems to be already known about

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=508427

Unfortunately it's been active as a bug(s) for years

Re: New fedora idle = 75% CPU

I just ran "strace /usr/lib64/firefox/firefox -P default -new-instance"

(that is, my usual Firefox command but not with safe-mode activated)

and the terminal spewed a ton of these polling...

Re: New fedora idle = 75% CPU

Try using Flashblock and noscript (if you aren't) to limit flash ads and other spammy junk, it helps for me.

But I am puzzled that add-ons support on a completely blank Firefox browser (for...

Re: New fedora idle = 75% CPU

In the old days of Redhat and Fedora, Fedora and Redhat Linux was using a lot of cpu on VMs because the kernel was using the newer 1000 hertz kernel setting. One of the fixes was to pass...

Re: mpd cli client mpc error

If it was a selinux problem, he'd probably find out because setroubleshootd's gui would come up with the event.

Re: mpd cli client mpc error

Take a look in /etc for a file called mpd.conf.rpmnew

Do you have one? If so you might need to merge it with the /etc/mpd.conf
and restart mpd.
What happens is that a package being updated by...
