F11-install from external DVD using boot.img CD fails

Hello all.

I have sevral older machines that cannot boot from usb. Until now I have installed fedora using the provided boot.iso on a CD and an external USB dvd drive with the full install DVD.

With Fedora 11, this fails.

It gets as far as "finding storage devices" and fails, telling me that an unhandled exception has occured. It offers to save the details, but freezes looking for a suitable location.

I have no such problems with the same DVD/external rw drive on systems that can boot directly from usb.

I am truely stuck. Can anyone help?

The boot.iso was removed from the media and is now called netinst.iso and is available from your local mirror in releases/11/Fedora/i386/iso/. Think that is the same one that is called boot.iso in releases/11/Fedora/i386/os/images/ Think you may have to pass askmethod at the boot prompt to override the auto networking install to be able to select a cdrom/dvd install source.

Thank you.

I was using boot.iso / netinst.iso . They do seem the same, but I have not compared them.

I did get to the bottom of it, sort of.

Parted did not like my old Fedora 8 swap partition!! Since all 3 machines I had trouble with were clones, the swap part was the issue in all 3. Once I realized that fdisk and the kernel had no issue, but that any parted based util I tried would fail to even load properly, I was able to delete partitions (I have good backups) until parted stopped choking.

Anyway, once restored, filling the partition with zeros and doing mkswap didn't fix the issue, but deleting the partition and creating a similar one elsewhere on the disk did fix it. The new swap partition messed up fedora 8 and it's resume in the process because the uuid changed.
