I am gonna go out on a limb. Try, killall -9 pulseaudio
Once you are done playing fire it back up or reboot to get the sound back to the way it was.
Since it is a 32bit game and assuming you are on 64bits maybe grab alsa-lib.i686 alsa-oss.i686 etc etc. These are just guess's but as a Linux gamer myself I do know that pulseaudio is still the worse thing to ever happen to desktop Linux.
