Dynex USB Headset Always Muted After Loading

I have Fedora 9 running on an old Compaq Presario R3000 laptop. I frequently use Skype with a cheap, generic Dynex USB headset from Best Buy. The problem is that every time I plug in the headset, the mic is always muted. This means I must use gnome-volume-control every time to unmute the mic. Is there a way to ensure the headset loads with the mic active (meaning not muted)? This is obviously not a major hassle, but I would appreciate the convenience.
