cx88 analog capture problems

I have been fighting with this for quite awhile now - and have posted previously about this as well. But I am still getting nowhere.

I have a Pinnacle PCTV Pro capture card, that has a Conexant chip. V4L registers the video device, but no audio device.

I can run tvtime and xawtv, and get (analog) video, but no audio. This is with both the coax tv tuner input and the S-Video input. When I try to run VLC I get the error main input error: demux doesn't like DEMUX_GET_TIME continuously.

I have read that this chip sends the captured analog audio via DMA, but I don't know if the V4L driver handles that.

I have tried various utilities (alsamixer, arecord/aplay, paman) to try to make this work, or at least find out what is happening, but still no luck - just a lot of confusion.

PLEASE! Anyone with any knowledge (or pointers to knowledge) of this PLEASE help.

I am using a Hauppauge HVR-1300 which has a cx88-chip too.
Only this works direcly:
mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:chanlist=europe-west:alsa:adevice=hw.1,0:amode=1:audiorate=48000:f orceaudio:volume=100:immediatemode=0:norm=PAL-BG
Of course you have to adjust the video modes.

In TVtime (F10) i can get by with:
sox -r 48000 -c 2 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp1 -t ossdsp /dev/dsp
(direct into terminal)

In F11 you have to produce the ossdsp with:
install snd-pcm /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-pcm && /sbin/modprobe snd-pcm-oss && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-device && /sbin/modprobe snd-seq-oss
in /etc/modprobe.d/dist-oss.conf

To fix the order of the osses put e.g.:
options snd-emu10k1 index=0
options cx88_alsa index=1

alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1
alias snd-card-1 cx88_alsa

alias sound-slot-0 snd-emu10k1
alias sound-slot-1 cx88_alsa
in /etc/modeprobe.d/local.conf

Thanks for the info.

I finally got (some of) it working: I can get mplayer to play both video and sound from the tuner input of my card. But I can get no sound from the S-Video input (that may be something with the input itself).

But I still can't get VLC to work - neither video or sound. I think that is just a matter of figuring out the v4l2 syntax it needs.

This seems to use OSS, and according to Fedora, OSS is being phased out starting with F11 (which I am running). So I guess I will need to figure out how to do these things with just alsa/pulse audio.

BTW: my ultimate goal of all of this (besides an exercise in futility :-) ) is to capture video from some old VHS tapes.
