Hi,

If you're looking for a Linux utility to generate RAR files (whether in several instalments or not), it is unlikely that you'll find one, 'cause RAR is a proprietary format and the patent holder explicitly forbids to generate RAR files without using WinRAR, which is available for windoze only

P.S. One possible solution is to buy WinRAR and install it under wine (winehq), at the price of -it seems- severely impaired performance. Wine is available from Fedora's repos. Apparently, WinRAR does support splitting files (volumes) (win-rar.com) of predetermined size

The command-line version of rar is available in the Freshrpms repository, and unrar is available in the RPM Fusion repository.

Translated with Google Translate:

El comando versión en línea de RAR está disponible en el repositorio Freshrpms, y unrar está disponible en el repositorio de fusión RPM.

None taken... Info about the patent holder of WinRAR only allowing decoding, can be found here (wikipedia). So, technically speaking, users of these forums publishing links to download programs to encode RAR files that are not WinRAR or RAR are beaking the law... Anyway, I didn't know that a version for Linux existed, so thank you for the update...

P.S. See also here under `Software'

P.P.S. I agree that the information contained in my first post was not up to my usual `standards' , but that's what happens when proprietary formats are involved. I was trying to convey to the OP the information that encoding in the chosen format could only be achieved by paying a fee to the patent holder

I believe unrar and perhaps rar will work with file-roller, but probably with incomplete functionality. If you want to use rar on Linux I think you're going to have to dig into the command line syntax.

If it's solely for your use, another option is 7zip, which is in the standard fedora repo. I don't know if there's a GUI frontend for it on Linux, but the 7zip command line syntax isn't too tough. It's in the standard fedora repo as p7zip:
Code:
Name : p7zip
Arch : i586
Version : 4.65
Release : 1.fc11
Size : 711 k
Repo : fedora
Summary : Very high compression ratio file archiver
URL : http://p7zip.sourceforge.net/
License : LGPLv2 and (LGPLv2+ or CPL)
Description: p7zip is a port of 7za.exe for Unix. 7-Zip is a file archiver with a very high
: compression ratio. The original version can be found at http://www.7-zip.org/.

I'm confused. yum info unrar says that unrar is in the nonfree rpmfusion repo.

7zip is great, and also split files into equal parts, but on Monday I posted my contributions, who were divided with 7zip, users still claims that I have a program that I leave for them (windows) to decompress this program is "7-zip". To be honest I like the zip format that most people use

I'm sorry but not sure what you mean by this? Are you still having problems? If so, feel free to PM me or post in both languages.

Lo siento pero no entiendo lo que quieres decir? Todavia tienes problemas con esto? Si necesitas ayuda me puedes mandar un mensaje o tambien puedes responder en los dos idiomas.

I think (though if Dies can speak the OP's native language, that will no doubt, quickly clarify--by the way, is that pronounced Deese as in geese or Dyes?) that he took Tom's suggestion, used 7zip, and the Windows users had issues with the format.

Zip, of course, is supported out of the box by Windows now, as of XP, I think--I don't think Win2K supported it.

Rar files aren't, at least in XP, I don't know about Vista and Windows 7. There's freeware for it, at least to decompress, but I remember my users at my last job would get them from one vendor. (I would just have them send it to me and I'd unrar them on my BSD box.)

So, unless it's changed in Vista/Windows 7, to get something that your WIndows users can use without having to think about it, I guess you need something to create zip files. There is a zip program for Linux, however, I have no idea about breaking it into files of equal size.

.rar, being a proprietary format, is not supported out of the box on any Windows OS as far as I know. It will cause the same issue as .7zip formats if you're sending the files to Windows users.

Compatibility is nice, but if we're talking about multipart archives, that pretty much means that .zip is ruled out. .rar files and .7z files are going to cause the same problem for your Windows using friends because neither can be used by Windows users without use of third-party software.

7-zip or WinRAR for Windows can both handle .rar files and .7zip files.
