My screen is blanking out on me every few seconds while the image on the screen is changing. If it's a static image, it doesn't blink out on me very often at all. I was able to resolve the problem with HUGE fonts by forcing my dpi to 96x96 (it defaulted to 300x300, like it thought I was 102 years old). I'm not able to get the blinking to stop, and it is driving me nuts. I dual boot with Windows7, and I had the exact same issue there until I forced a driver update.
I am also concerned about the revision number on these packages:
akmod-nvidia-190.42-1.fc12.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-190.42-1.fc12.2.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-2.6.31.5-122.fc12.x86_64-190.42-1.fc12.2.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-190.42-2.fc12.x86_64
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs-190.42-2.fc12.x86_64
Some are 190.42-1 and some are 190.42-1
Linux tv.gamer.gnukai.com 2.6.31.5-122.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Thu Nov 5 01:37:34 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G92+ [GeForce GTS 250] (rev a2)
I'm really bugged by this. The nouveau driver does not blink, but it doesn't perform at all.

firstly make sure you have 'nouveau.modeset=0' at /boot/grub/grub.conf , at end of line where kernel path settings are written.
then reboot
also do the following. and post result.
=======================
wget http://blogage.de/files/9124/download -O compiz-check
chmod +x compiz-check
./compiz-check
=======================
Also check with corey james at http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?p=1286427 , he seems be having probs with same card too.
also did you make sure , your card is not faulty? as you say you expected same issue when booting to Win7.

He's not having the same issues I'm having. His issues are resolvable with the overscan option in the newest drivers.
I wonder if my problem is related to the SPDIF pin i've connected from the video card to the graphics card. I hear popping noises when the screen blanks out. I don't see that audio option when I look at my sound configuration. system->Preferences->Sound . I only see the one analog audio output.
Yes, Windows7 works correctly, has since I upgraded it's driver. i am not confident at this point that this is a faulty card. Everything works great, with the exception of the maddening blinking. I can do everything I want to with the machine, but it's unusable with the blinking.
Code:

No, now I remember. It wasn't just installing the new drivers on Win7, it was that the new drivers have an option for 'HDMI with sound' and 'HDMI without sound'.
My previous card only had DVI, so in windows, I had to manually change a registry key in Windows 7 to force the connection from HDMI to DVI so my TV would go looking for audio on an analog channel. I could never get the same results in Linux, so for the last few months, I've had no audio in linux. I bought the new card partly to fix the issue by doing audio over HDMI.
So I plugged in my new card, and attached my tv via HDMI. Booted windows, and it updated the driver. Immediately the screen was doing the blinking thing I've been describing. What resolved it in Windows was to monkey with the option for HDMI with and without sound. It was initially configured 'with sound'. when I switched it to with out sound (to match the way I was doing it before) and the blinking stopped. At that point, I was stable and running, so I moved on to adding the SPDIF pin from the Motherboard to the card. Rebooted into Windows and changed HDMI to "with sound" and changed my default audio device. Windows is now running the way I want it to.
I was so encouraged by the success, I gave fedora 12 another whack. I am dissapointed that I'm seeing the same behavior in Linux that i saw in Windows 7, but not the same driver options that I used to correct the same issue. So sad that hardware drivers can be such a killjoy.

Got it! I took a page out of the previous post, and started to monkey around with alsa-mixer to see if i could do the same sort of 'enable/disable' sound through HDMI. Lots of people talked about using aslamixer, so I poked around in there. I have 3 SPDIF devices in there, two were muted. Between unmuting and muting them all a few times, I was able to not only get the screen to stop blinking, it simultaniously enabled the sound as well. Imagine that. This Card/Mobo combo must have issues with the way the drivers want to setup defaults, and you just have to "shake the dust" as my old dad likes to say.
Thanks!

Hello friends,
I had installed my Nvidia driver (Go 6400 series) on my laplop which runs Fedora 9 with your guide.
However in my System Display settings there were no Video card installed, and whever I tried to connect a LCD or CRT monitor to my laptop, some part of the screen were not shown.
Anyway I tried to install my nvidia driver (while it works on my laptop, but not properly on LCD-CRT external monitor) by downloading it from nvidia.com.
I downloaded.run file.
I made init 3 to stop x server
I run it by adding sh before the run file name (ex: sh er.run)
I installed it successfully with no error.
But now my fedora 9 only start with text mode whenever I type init 5, it waits and waits.
I tried to install with the same method that you provided that I succeed before, but got some errors
Now: Whever I type:
su
rpm -Uhv http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/...ble.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfr...ble.noarch.rpm
it says

whenever I type:
rpmquery --whatprovides system-release ENTER

What should I do??

Any advice? This thing is a slug on scroll and screen updates. Vesa driver on single screen was light years faster.
Edit: Well went back and looked there was no nvidia folder in /extensions directory.
Didn't have kernel-devel packages installed. The kmod was never built I guess.
Installed and now I have an /nvidia folder appearing in /extensions.
Noticed this
Quote:
|
ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extentions/nvidia"
|
Misspelled 'extensions' .
Changed that and its back to flashing screens and no X.
Comment that line out and its back to same with no glx.
So now I have the driver showing up in there, the 173.- in /nvidia but I'm getting the same issues I had when I had the arrangement of the "Files" backwards.--Flashing screens with no way to get to CLI. As in no Ctrl-Alt-Del or Ctrl-Alt-F2 and so on.
Edit: With the spelling corrected here's the output.

Nope, still having problems. I have no problems with the screen as long as I am playing audio, whether it's an mp3 in xmms, or an avi in vlc. It's live-able because 90% of what I do with this machine is watching online TV. It's just a pain to have to VNC to the machine from my laptop to start the videos. New kernel out today, so I'll report back after a yum update and a reboot.
kernel 2.6.31.5-122.fc12.x86_64
kmod-nvidia-190.42-1.fc12.4.x86_64
Edit: Cool, now I'm getting a weird error where my mouse is getting stuck inside my gnome-terminal. I can change focus to a new window for my keyboard with alt tab, but clicking outside of my gnome-terminal window generates these errors in /var/log/messages (all 3 errors from clicking the left mouse button on the firefox window).
(gnome-terminal:1911): Gdk-CRITICAL **: gdk_window_get_events: assertion `GDK_IS_WINDOW (window)' failed
(gnome-terminal:1911): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
(gnome-terminal:1911): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_unref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
Anyway, outside of that, I can verify that having audio coming through my HDMI port makes my video solid. If I am not playing sound, the screen flickers on and off at random intervals. I don't get it.
Any ideas or comments on either of these issues?
