acer aspire 5741g wlan bcm43225

i've searched for a linux driver for the wifi card bcm43225 but came up with none.

guess this is where i could've used ndiswrapper, the only problem is - acer does not provide xp drivers for this card, only win7 drivers & this is not good for ndiswrapper, so all in all this card will not work under linux?

are there any other routes i could explore? or i should get some other supported usb dongle for the laptop?

You need to install 3 packages:

broadcom-wl-5.10.91.9.3-1.fc12.noarch.rpm
kmod-wl-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.6.x86_64.rpm
kmod-wl-5.10.91.9.3-3.fc12.6.x86_64

This assumes that you're using kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 of course. If not, change the "2.6.31.15-127.fc12.x86_64-5" part of those filenames to whatever kernal you are using.

These files are all available at RPM Fusion, located here:

http://www.rpmfusion.org/

I can't remember the exact location of the packages, but a search for "kmod-wl" and "broadcom" will track them down for you.

Also, it's a good thing to add RPM Fusion to your package repository so that you can get these files automatically as your system is upgraded. If you don't know how to do this, instructions are on the RPM Fusion web site.

Hope that helps...

Regards,

Chris

Re: acer aspire 5741g wlan bcm43225

thank you very much!

i've removed ndiswrapper & installed broadcom-wl - the card was recognized upon reboot & works like a charm.

i must say i'm very happy with acer - pretty much everything in this particular laptop (even the built in webcam!) was recognizable in linux & works properly out of the box.

This also worked for acer aspire 5551g.
Thanks, chrison!

Re: acer aspire 5741g wlan bcm43225

also worked for the "e-machine E528' and all I had to do was:

1. Install RPM Fusion RPMs by following steps at 'http://rpmfusion.org/'.
2. Install broadcom-wl
3. modprobe wl

After installing RPM Fusion repositories, simply do the following.

# yum install broadcom-wl
# modprobe wl
# iwlist eth1 scan

Viola! You should now see any nearby wifi networks in NetworkManager tool at top by the clock!
yum will work out the versions and dependencies so we do not have to put all those version numbers out after the package names and hope they are the newest ones. Also, since yum will grab alll dependencies it automatically grabs the kmod-wl stuff!

Re: acer aspire 5741g wlan bcm43225

I spoke too soon, I had tried that on a Live CD but once I fully installed it, the same process does not work on the installed OS! Seems to be hit ans miss because I cannot make this work on Live CD now either.

The driver loads for me but I get no access points listed:

[root@ddreggors-mobile ~]# iwlist eth1 scan
eth1 No scan results

[root@ddreggors-mobile ~]# iwconfig eth1
eth1 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"" Nickname:""
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
Bit Rate:16 Mb/s Tx-Power:24 dBm
Retry min limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Managementmode:All packets received
Link Quality=5/5 Signal level=0 dBm Noise level=0 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

I have racked my brains out trying to make it scan for access points.
