Fedora 12, Run Level 4 fails to start up

So let me give you the skinny on the problem I have. First off, I am using VMWare Fusion on my Macbook Pro to run Fedora 12 for a Linux class I have. This install has most of the server packages enabled (since the class is for Linux Servers). When I open up the console in Run Level 5 and use the telinit utility to switch to Run Level 4 all I get is a black screen. At first I thought that it was just taking a while for telinit to shut down all of the processes I didn't need in Run Level 4, but I clocked the longest black screen that I had patience for at 2 hours so it clearly isn't that. I know that it is not my video card because I have another install without the server capabilities and it runs RL 4 just fine. I also tried the alternate utility init to change the run level and I had the same problem.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what the problem is?

Are you sure you have something configured for RL4? It is unused by default and you probably want to telinit 3.

Re: Fedora 12, Run Level 4 fails to start up

I realize that run level four is unused. It was just a homework problem. However I tried telinit 3 and I got the same problem. Sorry, I probably should have mentioned that as well.

Re: Fedora 12, Run Level 4 fails to start up

Hello,
The two run levels are 3 and 5
3 is terminal
5 is gui

From /etc/inittab

# Default runlevel. The runlevels used are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)

This line is how you set if you want 3 or 5

I am sorry, I don't think you understand what I am asking here. I know about run levels and all that jazz, my problem is that I seem to be unable to switch inbetween them. Sorry for the confusion.

Re: Fedora 12, Run Level 4 fails to start up

I would not think you could go into a run level that is not in use.

I just try do go down to run level 4 on RH6.0 and RH5.5 virtual servers

With RH6.0 I was able to login but no network
With RH5.5 I had network
both dropped me out of the GUI.

I did run command who -r and it did show run level 4
