Unable to share file please help

hello fedora community, decided to switch my work pc here to fedora today from ubuntu. everything is working great so far and I quite enjoy fedora, however i need to simply share my public folder and be able to access it from many windows computers with no accounts or users or anything just wide open. I was able to do this in ubuntu just by installing gnome-user-share and clicking one check box lol. So far I have tried gnome-user-share, samba, system-config-samba, system-config-selinux, and changing firewall settings to allow samba. none of those things seem to be working for me. If I go to a windows machine on the network and run \\shopshare (which is what it is named) it tells me I do not have access/permissions. any help is very greatly appreciated.

Re: Unable to share file please help

Thanks for the advice leigh123linux, I did run that command just now to be sure but i did already set that option using system-config-selinux. Still isn't working, lol file sharing shouldn't be this hard in 2012.

Re: Unable to share file please help

If I remember right I had to edit /etc/sysconfig/network and give the pc a proper name to get samba working here.

Code:
su -
gedit /etc/sysconfig/network
Code:
NETWORKING=yes
NETWORKING_IPV6=no
HOSTNAME=main_pc.leigh123linux
DOMAINNAME=leigh123linux
NTPSERVERARGS=iburst
Code:
[leigh@main_pc Desktop]$ hostname
main_pc.leigh123linux

Re: Unable to share file please help

Samba is a real pain, I use SSH for file transfer, more secure* and actually works (easy to setup and works, I tried installing Samba to transfer files and never got it working and just used SSH)

* well I see you are in a situation where you want everything open

Re: Unable to share file please help

yeah the setup i had on ubuntu was just gnome-user-share and i just clicked one option and then from windows i could run \\shopshare to access it from any machine on the network which was particularly useful because I run a computer service department and host all of my tools and software from this machine. so everything open is the way i want to go but i have been messing with it for days including a few clean installs and while im in love with the rest of fedora this is killing me i may have to switch back at work and just use fedora at home.

Re: Unable to share file please help

sorry to bump my own thread here but have been working on this for 2 weeks now and something has to give. from all the reading i have done it seems the reason that i cant get gnome-user-share to work is because of a possible issue with kernel 3.x ?? and samba I have given up on, I have followed every samba guide on the internet it seems and I cannot make this work. I want to simply run \\hostname on windows computers to access the public folder on my fedora 16 box if anyone has any insight on this I would very much appreciate it, i have been pulling out all of the hair i have left lol. thanks in advance for any help.
