Brother DCP-7030 brscan-skey scanner tool crash

I bought this printer/scanner based on the previous rather good Linux support at Brother.

Initially I had a problem printing pages. Randomly I just had black vertical lines printed until the end of the page, then having a lots of blank pages coming out of the printer. I contacted the support because I thought that the printer was defective. By submitting the form at the french Brother support, I just had an automatic reply telling me to contact them by phone. I did. All they could tell me was to contact a "Linux expert".

Later I found the reason for this behavior here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1342317&page=2
The scan tool brscan-skey (running in the background) interferes with the printer driver, so you can not have it running in the background while printing.

Now it's even worse, by using the latest USB libraries in F16, F15 this tool crashes at launch. This is the gdb output:

Code:
Starting program: /usr/local/Brother/sane/brscan-skey-0.2.1-3
[Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled]
[New Thread 0x7ffff6b6e700 (LWP 7126)]
[New Thread 0x7ffff636d700 (LWP 7127)]

Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault.
[Switching to Thread 0x7ffff6b6e700 (LWP 7126)]
0x00007ffff6f8689e in usb_set_configuration () from /lib64/libusb-0.1.so.4
Missing separate debuginfos, use: debuginfo-install brscan-skey-0.2.1-3.x86_64
I really don't think the libusb is to blame as all other apps work correctly with it. So I submitted another form to the french Brother support. I received immediately the automatic reply (obviously having no one to analyze my request). So once again I called them and here is the conversation:

Quote:
Me: (explaining my problem that one of their tools is faulty)
Support: Please hang on... (a long wait, hearing him discussing with others...)
Support: I'm sorry but we don't do any Linux support
Me: But still though, this tool is available at your site brother.com..?
Support: We don't do any Linux support
Me: Could you redirect me to someone capable to handle this problem at the global support, at least to inform the developers that there is a problem with this tool?
Support: We don't do any Linux support
Me: OK, I'm very disappointed and I suppose I will look for another brand giving better support
Support: Goodbye
Well, that is a special kind of reception...

So I think that we can't expect a fix in a near future of their scan tool (brscan-skey-0.2.1-3).

In the meantime I did a workaround if that can help anyone having the same problem. It consist of using usblibs from F14 and using a command to start and stop the scanner tool whenever you need to scan, to avoid the two problems above.

First retrieve the usb libraries from F14:
Download Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso
Mount <downloads>/Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso:
Code:
# mount -o loop <downloads>/Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso /mnt/tmp
# mount -o loop /mnt/tmp/LiveOS/squashfs.img /mnt/tmp2
# mount -o loop /mnt/tmp2/LiveOS/ext3fs.img /mnt/tmp3
Copy /mnt/tmp3/usr/lib64/libusb* from Fedora-14-x86_64-Live-KDE.iso to local directory
Copy /usr/bin/brscan-skey to local directory
Modify local brscan-skey add at top:
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=<local directory>

Add menu entry 'Scanner Start':
<local directory>/brscan-skey

Add menu entry 'Scanner Stop':
pkill brscan-skey
