Unhappy No sound with wine 1.4/1.5 on f16

I have the i686 version of wine and its dependencies installed on an x86_64 install on F16. Sound in wine does not work .

If I "Test Sound" under the Audio tab of winecfg I get what I can only describe as a puff of static, like a farting sound (excuse me). winecfg lists the selected driver as winealsa.drv. This happens in Win7 mode as well as WinXP mode.

I have tried with a fresh wine prefix with the same result.

All the windows programs I try to run with wine are silent.

If I use pasuspender to run winecfg, the "Test Sound" button produces no sound at all.

Code:
root@poodora:/home/patrick# rpm -qa | grep wine

I tried forcing the removal of the wine-pulseaudio.i686 package to see if it was causing trouble (some wine people suggested this) and it makes no difference.

Thank you for any help!

I got here through a Google search for "wine alsa sounds like a fart", so thanks for using that description of the sound. I'm getting the same thing, and sound in my Civ5 game sounds like a series of farts mixed with what should be the actual sound.

I'm replying here in case someone beats me to finding a solution ...

Just chiming in to say that I never did find a fix, but I have moved on to the wild world of F17 now (where wine seems to work fine, for what it is worth) so this problem no longer affects me.

A friend of a friend on Facebook was telling me they rewrote the wine alsa stuff for Windows 7 architectural changes, so it would make sense that a newer version of wine (probably included in F17) contains fixes for this.

Short of upgrading to F17 Alpha, I think I'll enable 'fedora-updates-testing' to see if a newer version of wine is available and try that out.

I'll post more info if I end up getting it to work.

A follow up to this: between the Facebook post and this thread (the clue that updating to F17 fixed the issue), I figured the new version of Wine would do it.

Here is the command I used to update wine in Fedora 16 (will probably work in other versions also. not necessary in F17):

Code:
[root@mysystemnotyours ~]# yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=updates-testing update 'wine*'

Oh no!

Now that I actually want to use wine in F17, I am being plagued by the farting sound again! Somewhere in the last month something went south, apparently.

Re: No sound with wine 1.4/1.5 on f16

I'm actually getting it somewhat randomly at home ... when it happens, I change the output type in my sound settings and all works again. Try selecting the hardware tab in sound settings, then changing the profile for your headphones/speakers. When it happens again, switch it back to another profile. Not sure what you could do if you only have one profile, though.

Because of that, I keep the sound settings up pretty much continuously while I'm using anything with sound.

Got the same problem here. Just updated to wine 1.5.2, and no sound. Restarting the computer does not help.

Also, I should add that this is on F16, x86_64 with wine i686 installed.
