Watch Mail

I was excited with the idea of finally having a real time mail notifier on my top panel. But as always, i should have kept it for later as Watch Mail item on XFCE panel doesn't want to work, after i carefully put in all the required settings from TBird. After i fixed everything that appeared in the log, it just sits there and says no new mail. Nothing in the log. Any ideas?

Maybe you could look into ~/.xsession-errors if there are any related errors (like unable to connect).
But doesn't Thunderbird have a tray icon so you could leave it running and it notifies about new messages?

No, not 'out of the box' at least.
Try firetray, it works very well for me..

One I used for some time and I liked was mail-notification. I used it in Debian and its interface was a bit buggy but it worked well otherwise. But I thought it's more for people that don't have a mail client (I used it to open Gmail in the browser), although may be not.
My personal preference is Claws Mail and it has a tray icon plugin (much less bloated than TB, works better too but is more old school in that we have to set up all its configuration options).
