Webmin from afar

Would anyone know if it is possible to access WebMin on my server at home from somewhere other than the local network? I think I'd like to access it from work.

I've been browsing the web, the WebMin wiki, etc, for information but I don't really know exactly what I should be looking for.

WebMin is installed and completely functional on the server.

Maybe all I really need to do is enable port forwarding for the webmin port. Sounds dangerous.

Re: Webmin from afar

If you have ssh access you can use a ssh tunnel. That way you don't have to diddle with any firewall/port forwarding, plus you don't open another access entry point to your server.

Re: Webmin from afar

I have had ssh access to the server for quite some time now and use it often. Just though that webmin would be neat if it was possible.

Re: Webmin from afar

So on your ssh client computer , add -L 10000:localhost:10000 to your ssh connection, then open your web browser on the client to localhost:10000 and you should be at the webmin screen on the server. Putty and/or ssh command mode will let you forward the port 'on the fly' but it's easier to open the ssh connection with the port forwarded.

I don't use webmin, if it needs something other than http access you may need to do some more fiddling.
