xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

The screen saver starts and locks the screen shortly after login (usually within four or five seconds), however xscreensaver is configured to start after 10 minutes. I do not know why it starts immediately instead of after 10 minutes has passed. I'm not very familiar with the configuration of xscreensaver and xfce4. I'm using the XFCE spin of Fedora 17. My video chip set is: 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07). My '.xscreensaver' file contains:

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

Do you get any related messages on ~/.xsession-errors ?
I would first try to delete Xfce's cache at ~/.cache/sessions (check if there's anything form xscreensaver in .cache too - I don't use it so I don't know).
Do it logged out (ctrl+alt+f2, login and delete the stuff).

Nothing obvious in "~/.xsession-errors" and I deleted the cache and xscreensaver still starts shortly after login.

Did you try, deleting both the cache and ~/.xscreensaver?
Also see if you find anything suspicious in Settings>Session and Startup

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

You might have better luck asking at the Xfce forum, http://forum.xfce.org/index.php because it might be something Xfce-specific. If so, please post the answer here so that others can find it.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

xsceensaver is not an xfce product and it's unlikely that problem is due to xfce. It may be the same if you configured xscreensaver under gnome r lxde or kde.

Use
/usr/bin/xscreensaver-command -prefs
as the config tool.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

I'd suggested the Xfce forum simply because there might be a setting there that's conflicting with his screensaver. Also, xscreensaver-demo is another way to configure it.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

Extremely unlikely. Xscreensaver has no dependency on the DE.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

SOLVED!

I read wiki.xfce.org/tips#how_to_customize_starting_xfce and found a reference to "/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc". Upon inspection of that file, I discovered that the screensaver is automatically started by XFCE (by default) in case the machine is resuming from sleep or hibernation. Search the file for "screensaver_enabled", which you'll find is set by the output of `xfconf-query -c xfce4-session -p /startup/screensaver/enabled`. After some investigation of xfconf (see spurint.org/journal/2008/10/xfconf-a-new-configuration-storage-system and bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=80635), I used xfce4-settings-editor to create a new Boolean property named "/startup/screensaver/enabled" in the "xfce4-session" channel and I set its value to FALSE.

No more screeensaver automatic start after login.

Thanks for all the help. I never would have found the solution without the suggestion to investigate the XFCE forum (I didn't know it existed). Sorry about the crippled links but the forum limits post content.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

I think you can set that from the GUI with Settings>Power Manager (there's a check-box for locking screen before sleep).
Also, at least in Xfce 4.10 in Settings>Session and Startup>Advanced there's a similar check-box.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

!!! UNSOLVED !!!
I was wrong in my earlier post. The steps in that post prevent the xscreensaver daemon from running, which does solve the problem, but also disables the screensaver entirely.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

I have nothing like that in the settings editor. Try going to Settings->Session and Startup->Application Autostart. I have Xscreensaver set to start there, and it works just fine.

Re: xscreensaver starts immediately after login to XFCE4 on Fedora 17

I had to add the Boolean value in the settings editor. There wasn't one there already. I figured out what setting to add by looking at the script ("/etc/xdg/xfce4/xinitrc"). My screensaver starts just fine - always has. The problem is that the screen is locked shortly after I log in. I assume that 'xscreensaver-command -lock' is being executed by xfce somewhere for some reason.

I am having this same problem. I've just switched to Fedora xfce spin, so for me this is happening on a fresh installation.

Would it be helpful to file a bug report?
