Question Fresh Live USB Fedora 17 install on Samsung Series 9, NP900X3C-A01SE Fails

Hi,

Today I bought a new Samsung Series 9,NP900X3C-A01SE laptop/ultrabook to run Fedora on, i knew there where some problems with some f-keys and suspends but as it is now I even can't install it :-(

There is no opictical drive so I have a USB memstick which I have used to try install it with.

I got the following error:
Error File not found, Error 15

I have googled and tried all the suggestions in the following threads:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=278426
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=281970
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=281572
http://ask.fedoraproject.org/questio...or-15-file-not

I have tried renaming the syslinux dir to isolinux, removing the findiso and tried install fedora 17 alpha and beta iso without luck and all I get is the file not found error.

I'm not a experienced linux user so I really don't know what is going wrong and what I should look for.

Any help and pointers in the right direction would be much appriciated!

The new Series 9 is really nice!! Really good feeling, I have tried the mac book pro for a year and a half and I really want to go back to linux :-)

/Regards Perty

It should work with a real DVD drive ;-)

Re: Fresh Live USB Fedora 17 install on Samsung Series 9, NP900X3C-A01SE Fails

Hi, i've also had A LOT of issues in using USB live distro and never digged really into it to understand what was the problem.. since when i need it, it is urgent and i've no time to solve problems :-)

To me, you should try the program
Universal USB Installer (.exe)
that is a freeware available online for windows. While other tools failed 98% of times, with this program i somehow succeeded in installing nearly 8 different distro, including Fedora 16/17. Just assure yourself to select the proper configuration and (better) to leave 100-200 Mb as modifiable memory.

Are you implying that USB install works differently to DVD install?

@ perty

Do you have UEFI boot?
If so can is there an option to toggle to BIOS?

I can toggle UEFI on and off, using legacy OS option, but when I set it to off in bios the USB won't start.

I'll try to create a usb drive as this now:

"As of Fedora 17, all images written using the dd method should be UEFI-bootable, and all images written with livecd-iso-to-disk --format --reset-mbr --efi should also be UEFI-bootable. Use of --efi without --format and --reset-mbr can be considered a 'best effort', and may not produce a UEFI-bootable stick."

from:

http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to...d_Line_Methods

I'm not sure if there is any difference between that method and the liveusb-creator on fedora 17..

dd is the best.

But if you can use only UEFI you should read this

That didn't work either. same error 15 and same File not found.

I'm not really sure what is going wrong, is it the installers to USB which is making errors or it is my system which is wierd? I thought that the new Ivy Bridge should be very Linux friendly but this is almost rediculus.

I'll try to use the dvd iso as a source to the usb now and see if it's working better.

This didn't work out for me either, seems that I'm doing something wrong as I cant write to the USB if it's unmonted and I can't write to it if it's mounted..

WHOOHOOO!!!

I got past the error by using the Fedora DVD ISO image and dd as follows!

Code:
[root@localhost ~]# dd if=/home/per/Hämtningar/Fedora-17-x86_64-DVD.iso of=/dev/sdb
7489536+0 records in
7489536+0 records out
3834642432 bytes (3.8 GB) copied, 365.878 s, 10.5 MB/s
I'm not sure why!

Could it be that I installed the efiboot.img previouse this one?

Strange indeed!

One more note..

I got this error when trying to install alongside Windows 7 and the installer complained that the target device didnt had a gpt label. I solved it by turning of the Boot UEFI flag in the bios, see this thread:

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=280906

After that all went well, seems like I can't get the wifi working... So on to the next problem :-)

@Perty spent a long time looking for this answer, thank you. I can confirm this works with Fedora 17 live USB and a new Samsung Series 9 NP900X3C-A01US 13.3-Inch Ultrabook.
