Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
Hi Guys. Can I just check others experance with the 12.6 legacy driver? Thanks to the pointers on this forum I've got it working OK (downloaded from ATI's site) on the latest 3.5 kernel on an HD 2600 (HP 8510p laptop), including removing the testing logo. (I can post my method if anyone is intersted - it's all here on the forum, but in a few different places!)
However I have a few questions/observations :
1. "Details" reports the driver as VESA:M76. I've removed the VESA xorg driver, and according to the Xorg.log file it is using the ATI driver. I just wanted to double check this is what is expected.
2. I get artifacts on the screen - bascialy small dots a pixel in size that change with windoes moving about etc. (looks a bit like a very light use of a spray brush in a paint program) They are not really noticable, and I also got them with the Xorg ATI driver, but they are not there with Windoze. Does anyone else get this?
3. I get blocks on the screen occasitioanllty that give a greenish cast to whatever is behind them. These seem to line up with bits of open windoes and go away as you move the windows or the mouse. They are not that annoying but are obviouisly not correct
4. I also get spcific bits of the Gnome3 desktop getting shaded in red occasionally (i.e the top bar, or when hovering over the Favorites icons after mosing over the top left corner.
Other than this things seem fine - just wanted to check others experiances to see if I can fix any of these.
Thanks!

i like being on the bleeding edge of development...
haven't really had any problems except for ATI... which shouldn't really come as a shock
... i have a perfectly good copy of Fedora 14 if i wanted to use it.

I get it too, for me it says "VESA: RS780". When using the Catalyst driver with my Radeon HD 3200 this was always like this since Fedora 15.

no I don't get this. Do you mean the default Radeon driver with "Xorg ATI driver" or the proprietary one? Maybe your screen is not as good supported under Linux than under Windows. Maybe the response time of your screen is under Windoze a bit better than under Linux or you just don't look carefully enough under Windoze. Some Laptop screens have a bad response time, when low power consumption is the highest priority (well I read something like this here).
if you get the issue of point 2, 3, 4 with both Radeon and proprietary driver, I would think that it's maybe a screen issue (or your screen is under Linux not as good supported as under Windoze).

if you want to reinstall it again, make sure that you first uninstall the proprietary driver properly.
the step "Remove Radeon From Intramfs" is not necessary.
this log file you quoted above is not the file at /usr/ati/fglrx-install.log or is it? I have completely different content in it.
the log /usr/ati/fglrx-install.log should be similar to this content (this log is not complete):

thanks for the advice...that's definitely my fglrx-install.log...are you using DKMS? ...any other steps i might be missing?

are you getting the "radeon in use" message too??
...any changes you make to the grub line? (i.e. nomodeset or blacklist=radeon)

good this log looks very similar to the log I have.
yes I get this message "radeon in use" too. I think this is not serious error, if you want to avoid that you can install it from console mode (but that will probably not solve the issue you have).

with the proprietary driver you need the xorg.conf file, but that's usually created automatically (a few month ago it was necessary to enter "aticonfig --initial", but it seems that's redundant now).

you can probably still boot into console mode, if you put 3 in the kernel boot line (when the grub menu appears, select the fedora entry, edit it, and add 3 where it says "linux /boot/vmlinuz....rhgb quiet", then boot it.
|
i should also mention that this doesn't work either when the drivers are installed...grub just hangs after 0...

Re: Howto for fglrx / catalyst (Ati driver)
so for giggles (and mostly cause nothing else has worked ) ...i've tried rolling a few packages back from Fedora 17 to 16... i.e. Kernel 3.4.fc16 as well as Xorg 1.11.fc16...as well as using ATI 12.4 still having the same troubles...
...can anyone entertain my idea with suggestions as to the packages i should retrofit that might make this work?

Should I try this with a Radeon HD 3400 card under F17 x86_64 with 3.5 kernel?
