SMB file size limit

Just bought a NAS drive for doing network backups. Currently, I ftp tar backups to this NAS device, because there is a 2 GB limit with the smb protocol. I have been trying to search the samba web site and here to see if there are plans to address this issue, but I have not been able to find any. Anyone know if there are any plans to enhance the smb protocol to overcome this file size limitation?
