switching video cards nVidia to ATI

Hi,

Right now i have a nVidia 6600GT installed and it works great. I am building a new mythTV box and want to put this card in it. (i need the component out) I have a older ATI 9200 that I would like to through in. So, how do i do this.

I imaging I first need to get ahold of a fresh xorg.conf file. using the vesa driver.
then remove the nvidia drivers.
then, cp xorg.conf_vesa xorg.conf
install card.
then install ati drivers via yum.

Is this correct? Where can a get a plain xorg.conf file. Mine is highly modified for Component out.

a 9200 can happily use the open source driver. I suggest setting up the new xorg.conf, then shutting down, swapping cards, and booting.

Easy as that.

I don't think open-source driver has TV-OUT though. I'd copy the xorg.conf like you said, and from there get the v8.28.8 fglrx driver from the ATI site as after that the 9200 is no longer supported.

Move your current one to a safe place and run 'system-config-display'

Whats the deal?

Please check out my ATi howto - At the bottom there's a section for manual installs, after running those commands things should go better. To rebuild the module after that's done, open a terminal, 'cd' into /lib/modules/fglrx and type 'make'

when i run..

yum install kmod-fglrx xorg-x11-drv-fglrx

yum wants to upgrade my kernel to 2869. But when i do that ivtv doesnt work. I removed fglrx and then new kernel. Now ivtv works.

How do i just install the 2868 kernel version?

In that case, I'll show you a little trick: If you browse directly to the Livna repos, you can download the fglrx kmod for a ton of old kernels! I'm assuming you're using 32-bit Fedora, browse here:
http://rpm.livna.org/fedora/6/i386/
Now download the two files needed for your kernel:
kmod-fglrx-8.31.5-1.2.6.18_1.2868.fc6.i686.rpm ( that i686 is important: Don't download the i586 variant )
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8-31.5.i386.rpm
Install those, then run the same commands you posted above but just skip all the 'yum' ones.
