gnome fails to start - windows manager ?

All,

The system is fc6 with all the updates installed. The system has two primary users, both use gnome. It has been running without incident until today. Today the system was shutdown briefly; after restart users did not come up in gnome. One user did not come up at all, the message was session lasted less the 10 seconds ... The other user comes up in a low level x-session a very old release ala 1996 or 7.

How can this be debuged?

How the the current sesson type be identified?

How can gnome be reset as the default?

Thanks - Dan
