[SOLVED] SAMSUNG laptop extremely high heat

I'm running F16 in my Samsung NP300V5A-S0CIN. With in 5 minutes of boot up the machine is producing a lot of heat. I could not use it more than 1 hour fearing that it may burn out. Is there any way to reduce the heat. I came to know that it is some kernel bug. But am not sure about that.

What part is (over)heating? The CPU, graphics card, hard disk..?

Sorry for not mentioning that. The exhaust air is too hot. So I assume it to be the CPU. The battery also lasts only for 90 minutes as against 4 hours in Windows 7.

Can you verify that by checking the system monitor (or use a program like "top"), and see if it's doing anything. You have probably already done this, but maybe it's a process going wild.

Maybe you could try a different kernel as well. You can find out if you have another kernel installed using:

I'll suggest you run 'htop' to see if the processor is loaded. Maybe some process is using the CPU heavily. (click on the 'cpu column to sort by cpu usage).

Also try 'powertop' to see if it can suggest the cause/cure.

My kernel version is 3.3.2-1.fc16.x86_64.

And I did 'top' and the resultant screen shot is attached here. From the screenshot its like no process is exhausting my processor.

I bet this laptop has two VGA hardware sets, I looked up the hardware specs:

and sure enough this is an optimus laptop, Optimus is not well supported under Linux yet. This means the extra VGA hardware is going to use energy even when it's not being used and so there's lots of extra heat. Nvidia has Optimus working correctly in Windows which is why that's cooler

You could try to get bumblebee installed, that's the main project to implement Optimus (which is an Nvidia technology)

My daughter had big problems with her Acer Aspire 5920G on the same issue.
It has been so bad that the CPU stops using one core. Solution was to turn it off and let it cool.
Now it is quite much better with newer kernels and the use of KDE instead of Gnome.
Why? I don't know? The only thing I guess is a difference is that I turn off almost every kind of desktop effects in KDE. In Gnome I don't have a clue. I hate it so bad that I have not paid time to find out how to reduce anything in that crappy DE.

I tried installing bumblebee as per the instructions in https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Bumblebee But while executing cp scripts/systemd/bumblebeed.service /lib/systemd/system/ I am getting the following error:
cp: cannot stat `scripts/systemd/bumblebeed.service': No such file or directory I think bumblebeed.service doesn't get created. I've attached the screen shot too.

That's because "su -" does a change directory to /root because using the "-" option causes the user's environment to be loaded and the user's home directory to be the current directory.

You don't really need the root environment in that case, you just needed roots file permission ability, so it would be fine to just use "su"

or you could do the 'su -' and then change back to that directory you were before

You do not need bumblebee service. Just go to your bios settings program and set graphics to "integrated" (not 'switchable' or 'discrete').

That's good if the bios has that option, I had an Asus laptop with intel integrated and a nvidia card, but there was no way in the bios to turn off the nvidia card.

I must admit my Asus laptop was not optimus based, maybe the companies that make optimus laptops have been better and always add a switch in the bios

I upgraded my laptop from F16 to F17 and I feel that the heat generation has reduced considerably. Thanks all for your help.!
