| F18 Development Pretty much exactly what it sounds like it is. This is the place to discuss and assist in the community development of F18, post Alpha.
WARNING: Any pre-release versions, Beta included, are for experienced testers only. Back up all existing data and read all threads in the version Development Forum before attempting an install. Errors can and will likely occur which may include data destruction or inability to boot other partitions on any and possibly all attached hard drives.
While FedoraProject needs and appreciates testers, you must remember to report issues directly to Bugzilla, after checking for pre-existing bugs. |

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
anything in your log files?
ctrl-alt-f2 to get to a console screen, and look in /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Also, I believe there is a gdm folder in /var/log that has the gdm error logs in it.

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
this is whats gonna happen to a lot of people that only install Gnome they'll get that famous error : oh, No. it looks like something went wrong " this is why i think you should be able to install 2 DE's during install an not just 1. Gnome3 is very inconsistent. one will have to install KDE or XFCE first an then do a groupinstall of Gnome

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
That was one of my biggest complaints about the new anaconda design. I just about always install multiple desktops on my machines here.
Like you say.. It gives me a GUI way to get in and repair things when one of the desktops barfs all over the place. (That is kinda what that "Oh No" screen looks like, too. )

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
i guess though, the % of linux users install/use KDE anyway. i dont think Gnome has ever had a huge amount of users use it compared to KDE, whether it be Gnome2 or Gnome3

I have not yet looked at those yet. I did this as the last thing last night before I went off to sleep! Will check what's there in a few minutes ...

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
By comparing with my F17 installation, I believe this is the relevant log file in the GDM folder. In my F17 installation, the file attached has four lines.
PHP Code:
gdm-welcome][1156]: pam_unix(gdm-welcome:session): session opened for user gdm by (uid=0) gdm-password][1308]: pam_unix(gdm-password:session): session opened for user username by (unknown)(uid=0) gdm-welcome][1156]: pam_unix(gdm-welcome:session): session closed for user gdm gdm-simple-slave[1129]: WARNING: Child process 1226 was already dead.
I will attach this file to my bug report.

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
Note that in nonamedotc's crash it's actually *gdm* that's falling over, not GNOME, so having multiple desktops installed wouldn't have helped...

Re: Fedora 18 TC1 images are out!
But I usually install multiple desktop managers along with the multiple desktops. So it would just be a simple matter of switching desktop managers and it's back in business.
For example, if I don't run Gnome, there is no use in running the bloated GDM. But Gnome doesn't work quite as well if you start it from another DM. So if you have both Gnome and Xfce installed, it's really much better to install both GDM and LightDM and just switch your DM when you want to switch DE's.
