My computer scares me...

So everyone knows I use Windows. Have been for years. My issue has been Windows 10 for some time now. Anyone here know for sure what my computer sends to Microsoft? Sometimes I'm scared to go online with it. Seriously.

If you have to carry on with W10, I'd suggest downloading and using O&O ShutUp10 which is free and simple to use. You get to decide what is turned on/off and they give detailed recommendations and explanations for what each setting actually does in that program.

Thanks, I'll look into it. Just hope it don't break the system.

It won't. besides which it will let you take a backup of settings first and restore any altered settings should you need to do so.

Re: My computer scares me...

When I saw the thread title, I thought you might have been referring to WannaCry, but with Windows 10 you shouldn't have any issues there.

As for Windows "phoning home", well that is something I guess most Windows users will just put up with. If it was me, and I had to use Windows for some reason, I'd do something like this: http://news.softpedia.com/news/block...e-488630.shtml

Doubt it works 100%, but hey, probably better than nothing.

Only if Kona patched windows on regular basis. Even if he has windows 10, the computer was vulnerable without the latest patches.

Re: My computer scares me...

@kona0197 reading their priviacy statement gives an idea of what information they collect to "improve and personalise"

if you're worried go to settings (windows key + i) and turn off 'send microsoft info about how I write to help us improve in the future'

I have no control over patching Windows 10. I can look for new patches by using Windows update, but the system looks for new patches and updates twice a day and has a very annoying habit of restarting the system when I don't want it to without saving data in any open programs.

Re: My computer scares me...

@kona0197 you have control to change this in the settings (windows +i) > update & security > windows update > advanced options > choose how updates are installed

choose never check for updates and install them manually or notify to schedule restart

Re: My computer scares me...

Umm no, you are wrong about that...

You can NOT stop Windows 10 from automatically checking for updates or downloading them. And even if you schedule a later restart time, The system will force you to restart withing 24 hours of downloading the updates.

Trust me on this, I'm a bit of a Windows expert.

And the subject of automatic updates has been a huge gripe of the whole Windows community ever since Microsoft forced it down people's throats with Windows 10.

Re: My computer scares me...

sorry @kona0197 i missed two prerequisites to see 'never check for updates'

you need windows 10 professional, enterprise or education and to disable automatic updates in group policy

Re: My computer scares me...

With W10 regardless of Pro, Enterprise or just normal W10 you can still specify the reboot hours via windows update advanced settings. it will only ignore that setting if your machine has not restarted manually or automatically to apply a critical update within 48 hours of it being downloaded.

Re: My computer scares me...

Yeah, and since I rarely reboot my machine, it's a PITA.
