Re: amd/ati/radeon fglrx drivers

Hey NixFu,

I just moved to Fedora and have been suffering from excessive heat and noise issue with my Radeon HD 4570 card. Will the instructions given by you hold good for this card as well or some other customization is required?

Re: amd/ati/radeon fglrx drivers

Well I have a new HP laptop and I used the package from the AMD site which worked for me.

su
yum check-update
yum update

su
yum install gcc kernel-devel kernel-headers wget

Then

su
new-kernel-pkg --kernel-args=nomodeset --mkinitrd --dracut --update $(rpm -q --queryformat="%{version}-%{release}.%{arch}\n" kernel | tail -n 1)

After

cd /lib/modules/3.8.4-202.fc18.x86_64
and created a symlink to the 3.8 kernel by

rm build
ln -s /usr/src/kernels/3.8.4-202.fc18.x86_64/ build

or you could

ln -s /usr/src/kernels/3.8.4-202.fc18.x86_64/ /lib/modules/3.8.4-202.fc18.x86_64/build

After download the amd drivers from their website
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/beta/amd...x86.x86_64.zip
Unzip it in my home folder.

cd /home/xiyit
chmod +x amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.3-beta3-linux-x86.x86_64.run

Then run the script with

./amd-driver-installer-catalyst-13.3-beta3-linux-x86.x86_64.run

Re: amd/ati/radeon fglrx drivers

That post was mid last year, at the time they were skipping part of the proprietary drivers on purpose, a part which controlled hybrid graphics(eg when on battery drop to intel drivers to save power and plugged in use the ATI drivers for full performance.)
This neglect was causing X to try and use both chips at full capacity creating heating issues. They had instructions for setting up individual chips and disabling the other but that was kinda defeating what I wanted.
A lot has happened since then. Including myself moving the Arch linux to learn more of the internals and control whats built into my packages.

seems like you still don't package these files, and i can't get fglrx started without them.

[ 619.555] (II) fglrx(0): PowerXpress: Discrete GPU is selected.
[ 619.555] (EE) fglrx(0): PowerXpress: Cannot stat '/usr/lib/fglrx': No such file or directory
[ 619.555] (EE) fglrx(0): PowerXpress: Fail to switch libGL link files.
[ 619.555] (WW) fglrx(0): PreInit PowerXpress failed!(EE)

...and then seg fault
