FC5 on iMac G5

Well, I've decided to give FC5 on the G5 a shot. But before I do, I have some questions:

- Will the airport extreem work at all? Or do I have to use wired ethernet?

- Will the iSight work at all? (its built in, and not really necessary)

- How will I choose OS while booting up? Will it be like bootx where it asks you at the begining?

- Do I just pop the CD into the drive and boot from it?

- Does it support this resolution, or will I have to use a warped 1024x768? (I have 1440x900)

- Will firewire work?

- (This is a long shot) Will the front row remote work for anything? Will I be able to program it to control a media player?

Thanks!

Well...It didnt work. At all. It booted until the "Welcome to yaboot" thing, then when I hit enter - i got a dead screen and crazed fans.

Any ideas?

Same for me

I also enter linux text, It started partially to install but then locked up. Screen went black and had to turn it off with the power switch.

I am concerned about the high speed of the fans and if FC5 would support the video driver.

So for the time been I am not going to try any further

btw why install Fedora?? Have you looked at Fink or Darwin Ports f you need to run linux programmes

Well, I just wanted to install fedora, because it is one of my favorite distros. And apperntly there is a big problem with yaboot and G5s. :/ I dunno how to get around it.

Sounds fair enough to me. I couln't expect a better reason.

I did some further testing

You can start the installation as follows

linux text video=ofonly

My first trial was linux video=ofonly
I did use the FTP install mode

it seems to black out the screen again after loading stage2.img

I subsequently tried again

linux text video=ofonly

This will use minstg2.img as installer (The text mode so no grapical interface)

I got so far that it brouht me to the partitioning scheme and I had to stop there because I did not have any free disk space.

I was hoping it would recognise my external firewire hard disk but it did not.

I try to go from 3 paritions to partition using the split function so as to free some disk space on the external hard disk but I lost all my back up data. I have to create a new backup to go further.

I repartioned my hard drive but I have lost all my back up data.

So before I go any further I need to back up my hard disk again to my fire wire drive
and download the 5 CD so I can do a CD install.

I will keep on trying!

btw the fans are going at high speed during the installations

Post Howto :)

1. Get latest Fedora Core DVD/CD Set/Boot CD
2. pass video=ofonly text options to kernel.. like so...
fedora video=ofonly text
[ the "fedora" part is the name of the kernel.. which I think is fedora ]
3. Do install normally...
4. Replace default xorg.conf with the file that I [ have tried to ] upload to this thread.

this will work for 17 inch monitors... and yes, you get 1440x900 resolution.
email me if anyone really needs 20" xorg.conf...

more detailed instruction for newbie...

I burned a DVD of FC5 and installation stalls soon after loading the kernel.
If I type "linux text video=ofonly" it seems like I can proceed with the instruction, but then I am hesitant because I don't know what choices to make given the various options.

I'm trying to install FC5 to an external firewire HDD - that way, if something goes wrong, it's easier to deal with than installing it on the built-in HDD.

Is there a more detailed instruction somewhere?

Is a fix to use graphical installer in the works?

Thanks

my case: Imac G5 1.8 GHz 17 " monitor (first version)

Hi!

I installed without problems (using latest DVD FC 5 version). I did not need to use any kernel flags... but I have no 1440x... resolution... The available resolution is 1280x...
My problem is with the sound support... It is not working at all... It seems like it detects the sound card but totem does not detect it at all... It does not find the device... Someone over there with the same problem? any solution?

cheers!

Did the sound work in the initial configuration wizard?

Run
Code:
system-config-sound
and see if the test sound works.

result: trying to config...

Hi, friend!!

Thanks for your answer!
I tried, but the following happens...

[root@icaro jabi]# system-config-soundcard
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
cat: /proc/asound/version: No existe el fichero o el directorio
cat: /proc/asound/modules: No existe el fichero o el directorio
cat: /proc/asound/pcm: No existe el fichero o el directorio
[root@icaro jabi]#

I could not hear any sound... A window told me to see the file /root/scsound.log to see the result of the sound card configuration. I include the content of this file at the end of this message...

And by the way!! Nice students city Southampton!! My brother Jorge (I am from Madrid, Spain) has been living there the last year! Maybe you even know it... Ok, it is not so small... He is studying marketing...

Thanks for your answer!
