On fresh FC5 install, initial "yum update" taking forever

Hi,

I just did a fresh install of FC5 on a machine which previously ran FC4 and could run "yum update" with no problem.

Now, with FC5, "yum update" takes forever - nearly every attempt to access mirrors fails ("HTTP 404 file not found" or "FTP Can't change directory" errors). I am using the default *.repos file defintions in the /etc/yum.repos.d firectory.

Any idea? The initial update is taking days (literally!).

TIA

Lavie

No hard evidence here, however try yum update yum as the first thing you do and try again to see if it helps.

Hi Seve,

Thanks for the quick response. However, guess what? yum can't find yum...

"yum update yum" returns "no mirrors found". I suppose the nextr step is to find the RPM for the latest version of yum and install it manually?

Hello:
Login in as root and do a # yum clean all
Then try again ...... it should be able to find the standard mirrors?

There are occasional 404s as the mirror servers are synced to each other. yum when a mirror isn't working tries the next one. I have not heard of it taking days however. To speed up the process try sending yum a break signal, Ctrl + C, to make it try the next server.
