Can't shut down

Hi Guys,

I don't know how this happened, but I can't shut down in Gnome or KDE. The close down button has gone. I have to go into a Terminal and close down that way.
Could any-one please tell me how to rectify this problem please, by bringing back the buttons in either Gnome or KDE.
I hope I'm making some sort of sense here guys,

If I understood you correctly, you are missing the "action" (system) menu...
as root at the terminal:
$ gmdsetup
Security -> enable Show Action Menu

Hi,
tried that but it didn't work. don't know if I'm explaining myself properly. Should I run my rescue disk?

... or just resintall gnome/kde... if it is only about the buttons you are missing... if the shutdown doesn't work for a normal user, then it is the permission case.
