no wallpaper in Gnome

Dell Latitude D620 running 2.6.17-1.2139_FC5smp.
I was able to get the wireless card running, the sound and video. somewhere along the line Gnome got hosed. when I rebooted there was no wallpaper. when I tried to run desktop backrground preferences I get and error saying "control-center" has quit unexpectedly.
I am currently using KDE with no issues but would really like to go back to gnome
Any ideas guys?

Any clue as to what went wrong to break Gnome?

You can try verifying your packages.

not really sure. I was working to resolve the issues with sound and nVidia video card. the first I noticed the issue was when I tried to set some new wallpaper. gave me the "control-center" error. I also get the error on several "system preferences", keyboard and mouse etc... another issue I have noticed is that my keyboard won't repeat, i.e. pressing and holding spacebar or backspace results in only one entry instead of several.
note: everything works fine in KDE.

p.s. rpm -Va only gave a lot of prelink output "at least one of file's dependencies has changed since prelinking"
