Plain login screen looks weird

I´m kinda new to Linux and it´s distributions so please bear with me

When I adjust the appearance of my login screen to be just ¨plain¨ it looks kinda weird, like all the alignment is messed up. I´ve seen the same thing with the last two releases Ubuntu. In RedHat 9 it used to look just fine. Is their something I can do about this?

PS: I´m using GNOME by the way.

Change the theme in System -> Administration -> Login Screen

That's what I do. The problem is that the plain theme looks weird. The spacing between the welcome message and the input field and the spacing between the input field and the buttons is way to large. Like someone did a really bad job at aligning the UI elements (used to look OK in Redhat 9 but someone f'ed with it). Is it possible to modify this layout somewhere?
