Sound card detected but doesn't work

I have a Toshiba a75s231 laptop with an ATI AC'97 based sound card, FC5 detects the soundcard but no sound is played, any ideas?

Pump up the volume!

Open alsamixer and see if there's any dials/switches that are muting the sound.
