backing up before updates and doing a restore if there are problems
I've never yet had to restore a linux box to get functionality back. i've only had to restore a few files here or there, replace a configuration file or uninstall an RPM and install the old version again.
I'm a firm believer in backups, don't get me wrong. I just believe in backing up the actual critical files and simply reload the OS to get the core functionality back if something breaks.
