ipw2100 wireless card occasionally recognized as b44 ethernet card

My problem looks a lot like this one, but I'm out of ideas:

I am running FC6 on a laptop with a Broadcom ethernet card (eth0) and an IPW2100 wireless card (eth1). Occasionally, when I boot the computer I get the message:
b44 device eth1 does not seem to be present, delaying initialization

Once the computer boots, I can get the wireless working by doing a
rmmod ipw2100
modprobe ipw2100
but I'd rather not have to do this. It seems like it is sometimes recognizing the ethernet card as eth1 and sometimes the wireless card. Does anyone know what I can do to help it tell the difference?

I found the line:
alias eth1 b44
in /etc/modprobe.conf, so I changed it to
alias eth1 ipw2100

Hopefully that will solve the problem.

By the way, this forum has been the single most helpful source of information in getting me up and running with Linux, so I'd just like to offer a big "Thank you" to everybody answering questions here. The level of support here is an amazing thing. I still have a lot to learn, but I'm loving it so far.

No such luck. Now I get:

When it finishes booting, iwconfig gives:
lo no wireless extensions.

eth0 no wireless extensions.

So it's finding a wireless card and a network, but it's not calling it eth1 and I can't connect to the internet. That network it found is a real one in my building, but not the one I want it to connect to. Reinserting the ipw2100 module still solves the problem. Suggestions?

I don't know what other information would be relevant to this problem. Occasionally (not always at the same time as the wireless messes up) udev gives an error as fedora is booting. I haven't been able to copy it down yet, as it disappears quickly. It doesn't seem to have any effect on the working of the system. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem.

If there's some other information that would help, please let me know.
