nvidia drivers in Fedora 7

Ok i didnt know where to exactly put this, hardware of software so i finally decided to put it here. Anyways i downloaded fedora 7 and i was reading some of the release notes about how they are trying to get 3d support for nvidia cards right out of the box, and it has compiz on it already so i though that i could just play around with it. I have never been able to get 3d support on fedora for some reason (i dont know im just stupid i guess), ever since fedora core 4 i havent been able to do it (i skipped 6 although). I tried following the guide on fedorafaq.org but it always seems to never work, it just messes up my xserver so i stopped trying to do it, then i went to the nvidia homepage to download their geforce 7 series linux drivers, and i switched to run level 2 so that i could install it and it gave me some error that has to do with my kernel, i didnt know i didnt write it down. Anyways, point being is there just like a yum command or a how-to that works to get the 3d support for the geforce 7 series?

if anybody wants to know im running a geforce 7950GT by XFX (the passively cooled one)

i would appriciate any help that you guys are willing to throw my way.

In relation to your original error:

i believe the error you had to be "kernel module nvidia not found", this never happened on fedora 5 or 6, but happened to me on fedora 7 with the drivers from nvidia's site.

Obviously using livna's drivers your problem is solved, and that is also the route that i took, however... why does this happen?

I beleive that there will be other fedora users who prefer the higher framerate given by nvidia's own drivers, as well as me, who have simply opted for livna's variant due to their lack of knowledge on this error. (not that my knowledge of linux is great or even good anyway)

Is anybody able to elaborate on what this error is about and how to overcome it?

My nearest guess is that maybe the path of the kernel module in fedora 7 has changed and additional arguments are needed during the installation process, however, i am often wrong

Thnx, nevertrustpeas

If you read the post carefully you will see that th O/P was trying to install the nvidia homepage driver but had a missing kernel-devel.
The Livna driver offers exactly the same performance as the nvidia homepage driver and is actually built from this driver .

Of course, silly me

I forgot that there is usually a problem due to kernel-devel not being installed, i assumed he had everything already in place that was required by the nvidia drivers. (as this would usually be the first step) and as carefully as i may read the post, you are aware of this due to your everyday knowledge here, not because it was obvious for all to see.

I was not aware that the livna driver was built from nvidia's driver, and i have tested the framerate with both drivers under fc6. Nvidia's driver did have an increased framerate, although not by a huge margin while running glxgears, and while playing WoW. (i wouldnt have wrote it if i hadnt tried it)

Of course, this also could be down to the way my xorg.conf was set up for each driver.

However, i did say i was wanting to find out where the error was coming from, as i thought it MAY be the same a s mine. I was not trying to inform people of that particular error

If you checked my post, you would have seen that i was relating to the way that you are with me, not others!

Considering that you are so clever, you deal with criticism like a 4 yr old. lets face it, your not that smart, just a paperwork boff who has done well with his tests.

Also now that you have me ignored, i suppose that means i can now get on with trying to learn without hardships from you. which is most welcome, and i thank you for that.

Of course, this goes off the assumption that you will have quite sadly waited around for the last post from me before ignoring me. but fingers crossed you have not loweed yourself that far yet.

I apologise for clogging up forum space, and coming out with how i feel about this on a public forum.

Although, im sure there will be others on here who may know how i feel

Tyrael, I'm agreeing with you 100%. This Forum is about helping each other, not about Ultimate Fighting. Let's drop the language and aggression so the CM's and Admins don't have to get involved. Any further comments - take them to a Private Message or direct them to me by email or PM.
