FC6 Kernel >= kernel-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 = kernel panic

Hello, All:

I've been waiting a little while to see if anyone else has had problems with these kernels, but since no-one else has posted with problems....

The last two kernel upgrades will not boot on my box:
Code:
[Vince@presario ~]$ rpm -qa|grep kernel|sort
kernel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
kernel-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6
kernel-2.6.22.1-29.fc6
kernel-devel-2.6.20-1.2952.fc6
kernel-devel-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6
kernel-devel-2.6.22.1-29.fc6
kernel-doc-2.6.22.1-29.fc6
kernel-headers-2.6.22.1-29.fc6
yum-kernel-module-1.0.3-1.fc6
[Vince@presario ~]$
I have tried all of the usual tricks that I know of: boot with apic=debug (standard for me), apic=off, and noacpi. A google-linux search turns up nothing, and a redhat.bugzilla search turns up nothing.

Has anyone else had problems with these kernels? Or successes? Any ideas as to where to look next for the source of the problem?

Thanx and Regards,
Vince

I'm running 2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 without any problems on IBM T30 laptop (upgraded from 2.6.20-1.2952).

Hello:

From the messages that I get at boot time, it appears that kernels kernel-2.6.20-1.2962.fc6 and kernel-2.6.22.1-29.fc6 are choking on fstab, with an error about "nouser". Here is my fstab (last modified Jun 14 2007, before install of those two kernels):
Code:
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 nouser,defaults,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 nouser,defaults,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 1 2
devpts /dev/pts devpts gid=5,mode=620 0 0
tmpfs /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/sda1       /mnt/c_drive    ntfs-3g rw,defaults,umask=022   0 0
/dev/hda /media/disk auto users,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 0 1
I don't remember how my fstab it got edited to this state, but "man mount" says that the "nouser" option is included in option "defaults" anyway, unless specifically overridden by a subsequent option. Same with "auto,rw,dev,exec,suid". I'm not sure how/why I added option "atime", but it doesn't appear to be the cause of the kernel panics.

Before I try to edit fstab to change/remove options, I would like some advice: is removing option "nouser" from /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 and/or LABEL=/boot a good idea? Would that help, since it's included in "defaults" anyway? What about removing option "atime"? Any other problems with this fstab that I missed?

Note: SELinux=disabled.

Thanx,
Vince

Hello:

OK, I tries changing the boot options for /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 and LABEL=/boot to:
Code:
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 defaults 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 defaults 1 1
as well as
Code:
/dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 / ext3 nouser,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 1 1
LABEL=/boot /boot ext3 nouser,atime,auto,rw,dev,exec,suid 1 1
both with and without "atime" and "nouser" options, with no change in the results.

The boot-time kernel panics are:
Code:
[...]
Mounting root filesystem
EXT3-fs: Unrecognized mount option "nouser" or missing value
mount: error mounting /dev/root on /sysroot as ext3: Invalid arguement
Setting up other filesystems
Setting up new root fs
setuproot: moving /dev failed: No such file or directory
no fstab.sys, mounting internal defaults
setuproot: error mounting /proc: No such file or directory
setuproot: error mounting /sys: No such file or directory
Switching to new root and running init
unmounting old /dev
unmounting old /proc
unmounting old /sys
Switchroot: mount failed: No such file or directory
Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!
[END]
After which the system is locked and requires a hard reboot. I'm still hoping for some suggestions before i file a bug report.

Thanx,
V

EDIT: For the record: I ended up filing a bug report at redhat.bugzilla: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla....cgi?id=250372, which was closed as "CURRENTRELEASE" when kernel 2.6.22.1-32.fc6 was released, installed, and successfully booted.
