Paranoid install instructions for beginners

Use 'Add/Remove Software' to locate and remove all traces of your current OpenOffice install.

Unpack the tarball and go to '/pathtoextractedfile/en-US/RPMS' (or language you downloaded) Remove either 'openoffice.org-gnome-integration-2.3.0-9221.i586.rpm' or 'openoffice.org-kde-integration-2.3.0-9221.i586.rpm' depending on your desktop of choice.

Just to make sure there were no problems with the Gnome menu I moved 'openoffice.org-freedesktop-menus-2.3-9221.noarch.rpm' and 'openoffice.org-redhat-menus-2.3-9221.rpm' from '/en-US/RPMS/desktop-integration' to '/en-US/RPMS'

Then I opened a Terminal and cd to the '/en-US/RPMS' directory, and typed:

su

Give the root password and then:

rpm -ivh *.rpm

Then open up '/etc/yum.conf' (as root) with the text editor and add OpenOffice to the list of excluded updates, like this:

Code:
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
exactarch=1
obsoletes=1
gpgcheck=1
plugins=1
metadata_expire=1800
exclude=openoffice.org*

This release also has a 'Quickstarter' and puts an icon in your Gnome Panel Notification Area.

To be honest, I don't know. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. It's one of those times though when I didn't want to have just 'bog-standard'

I used to make a habit of removing the Fedora supplied OpenOffice and install the official version. I kept hearing how they 'crippled' it in some way (Java related stuff?)
