bios upgrade

I do not see around how to upgrade bios. In my ibm thinkpad t20 there is only fc7 and bios from the past century. IBM supplies update as a MS *.exe. How to proceed? I am a bit afraid to do it by wine since I know to upgrade bios is the delicate problem.
Does anybody tried?

I think the bios will be packed with a small operating system. Just put it on a floppy or cd and boot off it.

Dell distributes .exe bios updates as well, but the updates are runnable from DOS.
google for freedos boot disk or something like that. I know people have been able
to put DOS on a USB memory stick and update that way.
