Thumbs down

I have tried all the suggestions mentioned and none of them result in sound working for me.

The ConsoleKit and avahi daemon are both running:
[root@vaio init.d]# service avahi-daemon status
Avahi daemon is running
[root@vaio init.d]# service ConsoleKit status
console-kit-daemon (pid 10770) is running...

I have removed the alsa-plugins-pulseaudio package.

What's really annoying that SoundCard Detection works fine and the sample audio does play but I assume it's because that program runs as root. Other programs such as Banshee, RealPlayer, etc. do not play any audio when I'm logged in as a regular user.

Is there any documentation somewhere on how the computer/session knows to start the PulseAudio daemon? Whenever I try and check things thru the PulseAudio manager, I see nothing running, and the messages are something like "Failure: Connection Refused." I haven't touched daemon.conf in /etc/pulse, so I'm *assuming* that the RPM installed it correctly. Could that be the problem for a lot of people?

I thought the problem might be because the sound card is detected as root too.
however, in KDE, the control center can play sample sounds and it is not
running as root. However, it's the only non-root (KDE) app that plays sound.

* Make sure if you have multiple sound-cards that the correct sound card is used. To do this look at the following menu.

System -> Administration -> Soundcard Detection

* Go to the settings tab and rearrange your sound cards to suit your situation.

* Make sure Console-Kit and avahi-daemon is enabled on startup to do this go to the following menu and tick and start the following programs.

System -> Administration -> Services Tick ConsoleKit Tick avahi-daemon

Nope I don't have multiple sound cards.
Yes, those services are both running on start-up. And yet, and yet. I have a small semblance of sound but it's very faint on Firefox. With my music player app (XMMS) all I get is low-volume static. I've got rhythm, I've got music, I just don't have any volume.

Go to System -> Adminstration -> Services

Tick Console Kit and Save it and Tick avahi-daemon and save it. Reboot and you should be good to go.

Seems as if the latest updates put in something to break my sound again. Sigh. None of the fixes we've discussed here work right now.

If it weren't so aggravting, it would be a bit funny.

What is the output from console? Simply saying the latest fixes break something doesn't help in getting it fixed.

I installed the latest fixes and my audio is fine.

Strikeforce, I realize that. That was venting, not asking for help.

At any rate, I've fixed it. It was a bit odd. Firstly, to answer your question, if I did mplayer whatever ogg, it showed the same output that it would show if it were playing, however, no volume came from the speakers. I doublechecked my console.perms.d, made sure that alsa-plugins-pulseaudio wasn't installed, basically, did all the fixes we've discussed in this thread (aside from editing asound.conf to work with pulseaudio.)

I then tried running system-config-soundcard in X, while logged on as user. I still got no sound, though it showed the device being detected, etc.

I then posted here in aggravation. After that, I logged into X as root, ran system-config-soundcard again and it worked. I'm really not sure what happened. (I then logged root out and rebooted, logging in as regular user, and everything worked.)

So, I'm really not sure. As we've discussed in this thread, usually, when that was the case, it was a matter of console.perms.d (or ConsoleKit. I've never quite understood how Gnome programs become so pervasive---even in FreeBSD which does a pretty good job of avoiding unnecessary dependencies, avahi-daemon, which according to its man pages has to do with DNS and networking, is a dependency for gimp. Go figure.)

When you say latest fixes, do you mean you did a simple yum upgrade, or something in particular?

I do understand your annoyance with my post, and next time I post in that manner I'll be specific that I am simply venting and not asking for help. Please don't take it as a reflection on you and the many others who put a great deal of time and effort into helping others.

Fedora has gone down the path of reducing package sizes as much as possible. So while FreeBSD does remove unnecessary dependencies they do that through making bigger packages.

ConsoleKit is what allows you to have permission to use programs and it is a security precaution in case a virus gets into the system.

If your system has no sound and you have multiple sound cards check that it is selecting the correct sound card. Check that the volume is up check that it is still recognised. Check to see if there are any errors in /var/log/messages and that directory dmesg and the like.

Those files will list if there are any errors. Then what you can do is either try and figure it out or post the output here and it'll make life easier for all of us who try and help people.

I have no issues if something doesn't work I just dislike venting for venting's sake. It makes people perceive that fedora is not working properly when 9/10 times it does it's just all you read all day is about the 1/10 people that it doesn't work. My (job) here is to make sure I help as many people out as possible and I'd like my life to be easier so I can help more people.

I can list a whole list of things that are brilliant with it. Yet on my computer in the other room I couldn't install the live-cd because of some reason. Yet with ubuntu it can install.

Oh stop venting.

I really do see your point, especially from an advocacy standpoint, it does make it seem worse than it actually is.

Now, a bit of trial and error and reboots shows me that my console.perms.d/50-default-perms edit no longer works. The only way to do it is to enable ConsoleKit at boot. Otherwise, though that root solution I mentioned will work, it gets lost at reboot.

I've added that information to my page. By the way, I linked to your guide from that page, I hope that's OK. (If it isn't, feel free to let me know publicly, and I'll remove it tomorrow morning--it's after midnight here.)

I don't mind the license states that you can copy it and modify it

chkconfig ConsoleKite on will make sure it is on for booting.
