Nvidia issues

Hello,

I`m having some issues when I try to enable the Nvidia driver on my FC7 installation.

The error message is this:

nvidia.ko for ketnel 2.6.20-2936.fc7.xen was not found

What should I do?

Please advice!

Driver has been installed, the same way as is is described int that URL. The problem si that It can`t be enabled.
At boot the error message is: nvidia.ko for ketnel 2.6.20-2936.fc7.xen was not found and the status is failed!

My apologies. All I can say is make sure the kmod-nvidia package matches the kernel number. When did this kernel update come out? Maybe the kmod-nvidia just isnt released yet? Did you have nvidia working on this install before with xen or is it a fresh install? Last, do you need xen? Judging from your screen name you probably do use the virtualization...

I had a friend that installed FC7 for me, because I was at work. When I check it I noticed this Xen kernel . Is there a way to remove it? If so, how? This is the only option I have at boot.

Is the first time I use xen and try to enable nvidia driver for it

I seem to remember reading that there are problems with Xen and the nvidia drivers. I will go check on that, but in the mean time, please post your hardware list and the output of "uname -a". We need to be sure you installed the correct driver for your hardware....

The Xen kernel is not currently supported by nVivida :

You can search through the forum listed above as some patches have been made by users or install a regular kernel, boot from that and then install the corresponding kmod-nvidia package from livna.

You may also want to determine whether you installed the correct driver. I think you should be using the legacy driver. (kmod-nvidia-legacy-1.0.7185-2.2.6.21_1.3194.fc7.i686.rpm) You could check by doing yum list kmod-nvidia* and the system will tell you what is available and what is installed. ( I am guessing you have the livna repo enabled..) But like Seve stated, you will probably have to find a patch to make it work with the Xen kernel. My advice is if you don't have a lot of time invested in this install, just reinstall the plain i386 kernel and go from there. (unless there are some Xen features you planned on using....)

How can the kernel i386 be reinstalled?

Before installing another kernel, you might just try removing your current driver and installing the legacy one.

As root:
yum -y remove kmod-nvidia
yum -y install kmod-nvidia-legacy



and see if the driver will work for you.......

Then you may have to try installing the i386 kernel.

You can find what kernels are available with the yum command like you did before...

yum list kernel* (we have to do it that way because I don't know the name of the i386 kernel package for the latest kernel)

Pick the i386 kernel that matches the driver you just installed. (ie 2.2.6.23.1_21) and install it as root: yum -y install kernel(the one that matches your driver from the yum listing)

Then reboot

You should have a new grub menu choice for the kernel you installed choose it and boot into the new kernel.

I don't think you will have to reinstall the driver at this point, but you may want to install the kernel-devel pkg with yum. Don't do this until you boot into the newly installed kernel.

Looks like you already have what you need, what you don't have is a grub menu item to allow you to boot to the correct kernel. Edit /boot/grub/grub.conf

Follow the existing format and add an entry ( you have to be root to edit the file) that matches the i386 kernel in your yum listing. Save it and when you reboot you should have a menu choice for the i386 kernel, choose it and see if things begin working with the driver.
