mysql problems

Hi All,

I have mysql installed and have two problems/questions:

1. When I go to start up mysql I receive the following: error 2002 (hy000): can't connect to local mysql server through socket 'tmp/mysql.sock' I have been searching the net for help but haven't found the answer.

2. I want to have mysql start on start up - do I have place a command in /etc/rc.local? If so what?

3. Simiarl to #2, but when I want to start mysql, I have to go to the directy /usr/local/mysql/bin and start mysql that way. I know there is a way to just make it so you can type the mysql command anywhere and logged into mysql - any help there?

Thank you for your time and help,
cranium

  1. The mysql server must be installed and running before you can use the mysql command line client. Run "service mysqld start" as root to start the server.
  2. Use the command "chkconfig mysqld on" to set up the mysql server to start at each boot.
  3. Remove mysql from /usr/local and re-install it from Fedora packages. That way it works correctly with Fedora's management tools.

Thank you for the info.

1. The server is installed and had been running (installed from source). I was screwing around and then that error starting showing up. I tried "service mysqld start" as root and received an error stating that mysqld was unrecognized.

2. Didn't try this yet.

3. Sorry to say I am dangerous enough to get this up and running and that is it. How do I install from Fedora packages? Will this affect the ability to use mysql and mysqli w/ php?

Thanks again for your help,
cranium

You'll probably want to remove anything you installed from source before installing the packages using yum, just to prevent confusion. I think the minimum are (as root):

yum install mysql mysql-server php php-common php-mysql httpd httpd-manual

Anything else required should be resolved by yum. It should pop up fully configured, though you will need to start the httpd and mysql services the first time out (as root, "service httpd start; service mysql start" should do it, or use the service control panel).

Put your web pages in /var/www/html/ and use http://localhost/xxxx.php to run them.
