MPEG-4 Decoder
I got some .avi files that are in MPEG-4 formats. The only decoders I've found online cost money. Any freebies out there???

I've merged the two threads as they're on the same topic. Please stick to one thread per topic.

Have you looked at DeVeDe, it's in the Livna repo.

I have DeVeDe, I'm just having a hard time figuring out how to use it. If I understand it correctly, I'm supposed to use it to create an ISO image file and burn the image file to a DVD. Is that right???? Will it play in a DVD player if I do it that way????

Yup. You just select what sort of disk you want (Video DVD), find the video file you want, create the ISO and burn that ISO to a target disk.
I've used DeVeDe to do this with DVD+R and DVD-R (single layer) and they play fine in my normal DVD player.
Your mileage may, of course, vary.

Now will DeVeDe burn it or do I have to use another program such as K3b???? If I do use K3b, do I burn it as a video dvd or as an image file like a Fedora ISO????

You'll need to burn it with another program such as K3b. Burn the image as an ordinary ISO. I find the easiest way to do this is to create the ISO (using DeVeDe) on the Gnome Desktop, right click the ISO file and select the "write to disk" option that appears in the context menu.
If you're more familiar with K3b (and aren't using Gnome) then go that way.

I do a bit of transcoding and if you use Windows (or want to install it in Wine) MediaCoder open-source and does a good job as well. If you're looking for a linux-naitive solution, check out avidemux (it is available in the Livna repository). You can use either to generate a DVD-compatible MPEG file, then use DVDStyler or dvdauthor (both available from Livna as well) to generate a DVD disk.

Oh, and I have one of those divx players too. I have to be careful with Divx, as my player only plays some divx codecs. I think divx 3, but not 5, or visa versa I forget. But it will always play xvid. You might want to stick with xvid to avoid similar problems.
</slightly off topic rambling>
edit: Oh, I see you aren't getting a dvix player. I read that as you were using one... That's my que to go get some sleep. Good luck encoding.
