Sorry I was offline for a few days.

Wow, bbfuller, you are a genius.

When you wrote that ndiswrapper didn't work with Vista driver, I realized that that was exactly what I had been trying to do. So, I thought, I will just load download the XP driver from Broadcom and be online in 15 minutes. However, I found that Broadcom doesn't have drivers for the bcm4310. I even searched the Broadcom site for bcm43 and for bcmwl, but I couldn't find the driver.

But you were right, I downloaded
http://ftp.us.dell.com/network/Dell...A17_R174291.exe
and unzipped it and found bcmwl5.inf and bcmwl5.sys.
I installed these into ndiswrapper and modprobe ndiswrapper.
Then I could select my wireless network from the Gnome Network Manager icon.

I am posting this reply through my BCM4310 USB Controller.

Thank you very much,
Dennis Krinke

Hello Dennis,

That's not genius, just way too much time spent reading various posts on the forum and putting it all together! Glad it's working now.

Just a word of warning, don't be surprised if you now decide to update your system and the wireless stops working even though you have updated the ndiswrapper parts from Livna.

Several people have been reporting that wireless doesn't connect using the latest kernel:

2.6.25.9-76.fc9.i686

It certainly fails on my broadcom setup, haven't had time to try it on any of the others yet.

Just continue to boot with the earlier kernel if it does fail, it's sure to be sorted out in a few days.

Bernard

/usr/bin/bcm43xx-fwcutter

I can't remember what version of the driver I had to use, but I'll attach the contents of my /lib/firmware/b43 directory if that helps....

I presume you are logged in as an ordinary user and have used a variant of the su command to obtain your root privileges?

Did you use:

Code:
su -
the space and the minus sign are important, without them you only get root privileges over your ordiary users area, with them you get control over the whole machine.

Alternatively, try issuing the modprobe command from somewhere other than in your Download directory.
[sean@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# ndiswrapper -l
bcmwl5 : driver installed
device (14E4:4328) present (alternate driver: ssb)
[root@localhost ~]# modprobe ndiswrapper
FATAL: Module ndiswrapper not found.
[root@localhost ~]#

I used su - and I did it from a dif directory... whats going on

Hello sleetm

How did you install ndiswrapper? Was it from the Livna repository or from source?

Can you try running the command:

Code:
/sbin/lsmod |grep ndis
and seeing what the result is? If there is one perhaps you could copy and paste it back.

Hello sleetm

Run the command:

Code:
locate ndiswrapper.ko
and see if it is found. That's the kernel module you are trying to load with modprobe.

If it's not there try:

Code:
updatedb
to do just that before trying the command again.

thanks for the help thus far, much appreciated:

[root@localhost ~]# locate ndiswrapper.ko
[root@localhost ~]# updatedb
[root@localhost ~]# locate ndiswrapper.ko
/lib/modules/2.6.25.6-55.fc9.i686/extra/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko
[root@localhost ~]#

though i did modprobe after this and still got that same fatal error..

Hello sleetm

I'm just off to bed, but I think you now need to run

Code:
uname -a
to ensure that the kernel that you are running is the same version as the kernel module you are seeing from the locate command, including the kernel architectire. (The i686 part)

If it doesn't then you need to update your ndiswrapper and that will depend on how you installed it.

If it does then I don't know, but I'm still going to need to know how you got your ndiswrapper.

Hello sleetm

Then your card has all the necessary software and firmware installed and is happily scanning the airwaves at your command and finding seven wireless networks.

What do you see if you look in NetworkManager on the top Gnome Panel near the clock?

Do you see the same list of access points?

If you do, what happens if you left click on yours?

What kernel are you actually running on now?

Code:
uname -r
will tell us.

One of the recent kernels does have trouble with wireless but we'll need to see which one you are trying to use to see if that has a bearing.

hi bbfuller,

NM shows all my networks correctly. When I click on mine, it prompts me for my WPA password and I provide it, the GUI spins around for a few secs and then asks me for the PW again

Hello sleetm

Sorry, I've been editing my previous post as you were writing.

Can you look at your running kernel version please?

Also, can you check the driver you have used with ndiswrapper. Ndiswrapper will not work with Vista drivers, only the XP ones.
