Fedora 9: latest kernel update (kernel-2.6.25.10-86) won't boot anymore

Hi,

this is meanwhile the second kernel update of fedora 9 which won't boot. it hangs direct on first stage when it tries to mount the root-partition - it seems that there is no device-mapper driver in initrd or whatever. It tells me it has no /dev/dm-0.

The fedora mailing lists webinterface seems broken this moment so I can not see if there is a bugreport in archives, thats why the question here: Has someone else this problem?

(It happens on x86_64, Kernel 2.6.25.6-55 works perfect.)

Any hints?

I also cannot boot after this update. Mine only gets as far as: "GRUB"!

Any ideas?!

(I should add that this is also the second kernel to cause such a problem.)

No problem here with X86_64 on my desktop system or i686 on my laptop. It fixed the wireless networking issues that the prevous kernels had problems with (slow speeds and/or no WPA connect) for my laptop.

I have the same problem with fc8 latest kernel. Mine locks up when it tries to start sshd. The previous kernel works fine. X86-64 system.

I have the exact same problem and am stuck. It goes to GRUB and does not boot.

I'm not stuck anymore.

I booted into rescue mode using the Fedora 9 x86_64 DVD,

Then after "chroot /mnt/sysinstall"

# grub

at the grub prompt:

find /grub/grub.conf

it responds with (hd0,0)

root (hd0,0)
setup (hd0)
exit

# exit

and the machine rebooted and all is well.

I found a solution for my problem:

I saw that in /etc/fstab the filesystems where mounted via /dev/dm-0 and so on.

that is wrong. Seems that this comes with an upgrade from fedora 8.

So I did following:

replaced in /etc/fstab /dev/dm-0 with /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00 and so on (you have to check it your self)

rebooted the old kernel, remove with rpm -e --nodeps the new kernel package only, dann yum update the new kernel will get reinstalled.

it generates a correct initrd and root in grub-commandline is set to the volgroup not to dm-0!

Hell. There goes somethin real wrong with the kernel updates, don't know if due upgrade from fedora 8 (all systems I had this problem where upgrades) or not. But it isn't nice.

(Oh... For others who may use this in a "copy-n-paste" manner: It's "quit" to exit from grub, not "exit".)

$ chroot /mnt/sysimage
$ grub-install /dev/sda
