www.microsoft.com obviously

Look for "embeded Vista" drivers. They are LHQL certified

LHQL = Linux High Quality Labs

Try http://keytouch.sourceforge.net/index.php

It has an RPM that states it is for FC5 or 6 I think, but it might work. If it isn't one of the supported keyboard types, it has an editor that should pick up the missing keys and allow you to assign them.

i installed the program...then i installed the editor...then i defined the keyboard and imported it to the list...everything works except for the fact that no key special keys that i mapped works...even the volume control does not work now...

i read the manual...and did everything what it said, but still no luck...i have written a mail about this to the creator...i await his reply...

You may have to reassign the keys. There were more than one version of the 4000. I have one working with F8 but found that some of the keys reported on some sites didn't work. It seems MS reassigned most keys in later models. The multimedia keys will work but the star and associated keys I haven't had any luck with.
I use lineak and followed the advice on this site http://liquidat.wordpress.com/2007/0...ds-with-linux/

can you mail me your .conf file? is your lineakconfig working? it isnt for me...
it says fatal error...some required file is missing...

EDIT:I just noticed something...

1.The back/forward special buttons work on firefox and fire-browser and konquror but not on opera browser(i can take that as opera's fault)
2.the volume control/volume mute play-pause button works on every other user-account accept mine...
3.the zoom lever in the middle does not work at all

here is the 4000 section of my /etc/lineakkb.def. Note that I changed a couple of the keys and added others. This was after my checking with xev.

Code:
[MNEK4K]
   brandname = "Microsoft"
   modelname = "Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000"
   [KEYS]
         Home            = 178
         Search          = 229
         Mail            = 236
         Mute            = 160
         VolumeDown      = 174
         VolmeUp         = 176
         Play|Pause      = 162
         Calculator      = 161
         Back            = 234
         Forward         = 233
         Help            = 245
         Undo            = 135
   [END KEYS]
[END MNEK4K]
and this is my lineakd.conf
Code:
# LinEAK - Linux support for Easy Access and Internet Keyboards
#  Copyright (c) 2001,2002, 2003  Sheldon Lee Wen <leewsb@hotmail.com> (Current Maintainer)
#  	and Mark Smulders <Mark@PIRnet.nl>
#  http://lineak.sourceforge.net
#
# lineakd configuration file
#
# example key configuration:
# 	play	= "xmms --play-pause"
# 	eject	= EAK_EJECT
#
# Lineakd supports the following modifier keys:
#    control alt shift mod2 mod3 mod4 mod5

CdromDevice = /dev/cdrom
Display_align = center
Display_color = 0aff00
Display_font = -adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal-*-*-240-*-*-p-*-*-*
Display_hoffset = 0
Display_plugin = xosd
Display_pos = bottom
Display_soffset = 1
Display_timeout = 3
Display_voffset = 50
KeyboardType = MNEK4K
MixerDevice = /dev/mixer
RAWCommands =
Screensaver =
conffilename = /home/jim/.lineak/lineakd.conf
keystate_capslock =
keystate_numlock =
keystate_scrolllock =

Back = AMAROK_BACK
Calculator = kcalc
Forward = AMAROK_FORWARD
[Web] Home = firefox
[Home] Home+alt = KONQUEROR_HOME
Mail = thunderbird
Mute = AMAROK_VOLUMEMUTE
Play|Pause = AMAROK_PLAYPAUSE
Search = kfind
[Photos] Search+control = digikam
VolmeUp = AMAROK_VOLUMEUP
VolumeDown = AMAROK_VOLUMEDOWN
The "Zoom" and "My Favourites" keys don't work. xev doesn't report a keycode for them so they can't be assigned. If anyone knows how to please share it.

I should add I'm running F8 KDE but that shouldn't affect the config files.

thanks a lot mate...sorry about the delay...

the favourates button works for me in Fedora9 /Gnome...but the zoom buttons dont...

i have mapped most of the special buttons using the "keyboard shortcuts" application provided in System>Preferences>Personal>Keyboard Shortcuts...

mapped everything except the zoom switch...mapped even the special configurable buttons...

mapped button1 to computer
mapped button2 to terminal
mapped button3 to ----
mapped button4 to befault media player
mapped button5 to lockscreen

i wish i had more options in the keyboard shortcuts application....the application recognises every signal and returns scan-code except the scan-code of zoom button...

Interesting, I tried again but couldn't get it to work and then restarted in Gnome and it worked. Obviously Gnome recognises more keys than KDE. This will require a little more research. I'm still using F8 at the moment.

BTW what Keyboard type and layout have you selected?
