Fedora - How/what to format hard drive
New to Linux, what utility can be used to format the hard drive before installing Fedora 9 - and how...?

The Fedora 9 install process includes partitioning of the drive. What's you plan. Are you installing Fedora only or are you planning on a dual boot with Windows?

Just pop in an install CD and go -- It'll ask you to partition and format your hard-drive, just like a windows install.

Yep. As you move through the install process you will get to the partitioning step and you can choose remove all partitions and create default layout.. That should work just fine for you.

Some may disagree, but there is a significant group of Fedora users who consider the default disk arrangement that the Fedora installer selects is suboptimal. The installer creates a logical volume manager (LVM) layer. LVM us important to data servers and may even be useful if you have multiple disks devoted to Linux, however it has no significant value and some sdeficiencies for a single disk installation.
DO use the default for the first o-round, but I would suggest that you play with the setup for a few hours/days then re-install with a ... ~2GB swap partition(see the release notes for size suggestion) , a ~20GB "/" partition and any further space can be assigned to a "/home" or "/opt" partition as you prefer. Swap has it's own format, the others should be ext3 file systems. The "custom disk configuration" option of the installer will allow yo to do this (and a lot more).
Use the "search" tab when/if you decide to custom config.

I don't use LVM either but the default LVM is probably easiest for new users. I agree that later on they can move to a different partitioning scheme, but for now this will get him up and running in the shortest and easiest fashion.

I need to format a Hard Drive with fedora already installed, how can I do it? I want to format it to ext3.

As stated in a lot of other posts use "SystemRescueCd"
gparted is on it
