Converting DTS 5.1 WAV to FLAC

I have a DTS encoded wav file in 5.1 surround sound that I'd like to convert to flac, preserving all channels. I've tried simply running 'flac file.wav' and the process completes without errors, but when trying to play it, I only get a buzzing sound. The original wav file plays fine in Totem. Can anyone help me with this? TIA.
