Automounted usb hard drive requires root?

When gnome mounts my external harddrive when I plug it in, I get a nice icon on the desktop with the partition label, ie EXTERNAL. However, when I open it and try to cut/paste files onto the drive, it does not work - if I start nautilus as root and try the same it works fine.

Is there a way to make the automounted drive have full RW access for my user automatically?
